Ultra Pure Lamp Oil made in Wisconsin. Target sells it under [it seems] a new name each year, but if you look on the back of the bottle you will see "Ultra Pure" manufactured by Lamplight Farms, Menomenee, Wisconsin, a copyright trademark. Pool and Patio stores also sell it in quart bottles but make sure you get the 100% pure parafin Ultra Pure. They also make another type with citronella in it. Good if you have bugs inside your horn I guess.

You DO NOT need to go crazy with this ....
Do your local merchants a service, and patronize the local "mom & pop" hardware store. You will find ample selections of lamp oil.
Tell 'em "Robert" sent you ....

Good on Ye', Lad.
Keep trying. Avoid the "big box" stores, if possible.

I believe in supporting Mom and Pop stores as much as possible as well. That said, Target was a major sponsor of my concerts with the Minnesota Orchestra which gives me ample reasons to give them a plug here. Now that they no longer stock the Ultra Pure lamp oil I will check other sources. For what it's worth, the recently retired president of Target founded the MIM in Phoenix out of his own pocket. MIM is a wonderful museum of musical instruments with a performing arts section as well. The likes of Doc Severinsen have performed there recently. When I worked for him I would oil his valves with my oil, not the T-3 he said was his favorite. Funny how he loved the valves when he picked up his horn, but of course this is the same guy who spit on his valves for years and wondered where the tobacco particles came from in his horn.

Tony, I believe this is the stuff you want:
http://www.tikibrand.com/Torch-Fuel-Lamp-Oil/TIKI-UltraPure-Oil/1451
They appear to sell it under the Tiki brand now, probably because it's a well-known name, but it's still Lamplight in Menomonee Falls, WI (just up the street from me).

i just found that too. home depot carries TIKI stuff but not that one:-(
i think my local mom and pop, B&B hardware in Culver city, has the ultra pure.
i'm going to pop over on my way to rehearsal today
thanks
**UPDATE**
just got some Ultra Pure from ACE hardware for $4.99 for 18oz.
they had a bigger jug for 20 bucks but i thought i'd give it a try first.
what exactly does the Break Free do?
does it thicken or dillute the lamp oil???
i'm going 100% ultra pure for a few days on my Bach to see what happens. i cleaned out the cases & valves and oiled them up.
**UPPERDATE**
i've been using the straight lamp oil for a couple of days now and it works just fine. i'll be making the switch to this for all of my horns now.
thanks for the tip Tony.

I know this is a thread with a long white beard, but still:
http://www.ar15.com/archive/topic.html?b=3&f=7&t=258341
In short:
Break Free, can be bad in contact with skin. Probably even worse when inhaled.
While health-friendly paraffin oil can be obtained, with Break-Free this is not the case.
I found Frog-Lube and Fireclean as enveirenement-friendly substitutes.
However, I don't know how they interact with paraffin oil. |

Odorless lamp oil - Walmarts on line or at a store; 32 oz for $4+ bucks. _________________ Finally Beiderbecke took out a silver cornet. He put it to his lips and blew a phrase. The sound came out like a girl saying ‘yes.’. . . . .Eddie Condon/ |

Sorry for bumping...just my thoughts...
after some further investigating, it's clear that the Japanese have advanced the technology of burning kerosene over the last thirty years from what we remember and learned as kids and now as adults. The kerosene heaters we currently use were designed by Corona, Toyotomi/Kero-Sun and others in the 1970's. The latest units sold at Sears, Home Depot and Lowes are all cheaply made Korean and Chinese clones. They work on the principle of these lamps - https://bestlightguide.com However, the Japanese continue to design and manufacture the very best kerosene heaters but no longer export them to the United States.

The current batch of high quality Japanese made kerosene heaters are manufactured by three main companies; Corona, Toyotomi, and Dainichi. There are many websites that discuss life in Japan and how they heat their homes and apartments using just kerosene heaters and Kotatsu tables which are simple tables with an electric heater suspended under the top of the table.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kotatsu
Even though I have a full house gen-set for emergencies, I also keep several LED lanterns with rechargable batteries (and a few solar chargers), 2 Aladdin and 1 Petromax lanterns https://bestoutdooritems.com/best-kerosene-lanterns-oil-lamp/ that burn kerosene and give off a nice white light for reading or detail work, a half dozen smaller kerosene lanterns and plenty of spare wicks, probably around 8 or 9 oil lamps (I don't use 'em much because they smoke pretty bad even with the best grade of oil and wick I can buy), two Coleman duel fuel white gas/unleaded gas lanterns with spare mantles and plenty of , and a dinky 1 lb propane fueled lantern that I bought for some reason or another years ago. I have a ton of the little 1 lb cylanders so it should last a long time if I need to use it.
Best advice I can give about the kero and oil lamps is to NOT cheap out on the grade of fuel and the wicks. They will determine whether you have a reasonable amount of light and a breathable atmosphere in your house or if you will get a weak yellow flame with little light and so much smoke the neighbors might call the fire dept to put out your house! Get the best you can afford. The lamps are just fuel recepticles and a dial for moving the wick up and down. Spend the money on the fuel and wicks and you won't be sorry. |
This dude thinks that we care about the "lamp" part of lamp oil. Lol. _________________ LA Benge 3X Bb Trumpet

It costs a few pennies less on the least expensive accessory.
