This summer, I accidentally bit my lip rather hard. I did not play trumpet as much as usual with the bite, but I still did play. Now, I have a scar on my lip that does not seem to be going away. It messes with my endurance, as it is painful to play on it for too long, and it is right where the rim is. Is there any way I can lessen the scar’s effect on my playing? Thank you for any help.

You will need to at this from two points of view, the trumpet playing one and the medical one.

As far playing trumpet goes, you may need to move the mouthpiece position to lessen the effect of the scar on your setup. Sounds drastic, but it's not impossible. You may also be able to practice your way out of this, but if there is pain involved, and additional solution is going to be needed to deal with that.

Medically, go see your GP and get a referral to a plastics specialist. Only they can tell you what they may be able to do to help. the other to investigate is the pain side of things; a specialist may be able to help you there.

cheers

Andy

If it’s an actual scar, then you may need a medical opinion, as Andy mentioned, as to what options you might have. But if it just an cut/abrasion that has not completely healed, your answer might be to simply let it COMPLETELY heal. I had a similar situation in college, a zit that I refused to stop playing on would not heal, BECAUSE I DID NOT STOP PLAYING ON IT.

Again, depends on exactly what you’re dealing with here. Either way, don’t get discouraged, most likely it can be dealt with, if it’s just an unhealed cut it could be as easy as staying off of it for a while.
