I've been working on some new mouthpiece and horn design concepts and have been doing some experimenting as a result. My first exploration is with back bores. I wrote a blog about it!

Here it is.

I'm pretty excited about stage one. Next will be to mess with the horn itself!

This looks like a promising area to improve high end range. I use a Wedge Superchops 4, and have found that the small backbore greatly improves the high range, tho I can only reliably pop out a Bb. It is good to hear an explanation of the physical concepts involved. I was an environmental noise consultant, with some basic understating of acoustics, and I have hoped that someone could explore these topics in a scientific manner. So thanks!

jbuntin,

I'm pleased you found the little blog interesting reading. I'm really into exploring the acoustics and physics behind all of this stuff and then finding a way to fit it all into language that makes sense both to physicists AND trumpet players. This isn't intended to be smug. At times it really seems like we are at least using different dialects if not different interpretations of language altogether!
