Hello. I understand that gold plating is for players who perform better with a warm and wet mouthpiece, but I like warm but barely wet mouthpieces. Is gold plating still suitable, rather than silver plating? |

Great article. A few sentences perhaps worth archiving here, words from the late Scott Laskey: "One of the things I learned was the grain structure of gold is much tighter than that of silver. When you get a little bit of moisture on the rim, it becomes slick and almost glass like against the face....I suspect that this slickness of moisture on the rim was the 'soft feeling' many who play gold rave about.”
So the "slickness" on the lips we may experience with gold is due to the "grain structure" of gold being much "tighter" or denser in comparison. This finally makes sense. It also makes me wonder how this translates to silver- v. gold-plated horns.

I don’t notice a difference. I own mouthpieces that are gold plated and silver plated and use them on a regular basis.

I like the slipperiness of gold, but I've noticed when the gold ages it becomes less slippery even after being washed. Might have been the quality of the plating. _________________ Dave Wisner
