No idea which topic this would relate to the most so I'll post it here,

How does one know if valve/slide oil has gone rancid? I found some in my room recently and its color is slightly off and I have no idea if that really was its orginal color or not. Its some Holton Slide oil i had laying around from middle school and i dont know if I can use it or not

If in doubt, throw it out. Buy a new bottle.

While you are out shopping, pick up a new toothbrush, too. Splurge!!

I once left some valve oil near a window and it probably got too hot from the sun streaming in and it developed a funny smell. I expect the smell was actually from the plastic bottle rather than the oil itself as plastic is more likely to be affected by heat. In any case, I have since learnt to keep my oil out of direct sunlight.

The colour change you mention could be be leaching from the bottle. If it looks or smells funny you should probably not use it as you don't want to risk any damage to your horn. Oil is not that expensive, but your horn is!

If it is synthetic it should not go bad over time. If it has natural oils etc. its going to get rancid. My two cents.

Some oils will polymerize, and if there are lighter fractions they will preferentially evaporate, which is to say that an oil will tend to become more viscous over time.

If you decide to use it the worst that would happen is that your horn would be more gunky and the valves or slides might be a tad slower. But it won't blow up or poison you (.. I hope).

Or …….combine questionable valve oil with 1/2 cup balsamic vinegar, 1 tsp mustard, 1/4 tsp sea salt 1/8 tsp fresh ground pepper and add to recalled romaine lettuce in the bottom of your fridge - hope you are not busy for the next couple of days! (it's a joke, throw out the bad oil, not worth it)

I've never had a bottle long enough, I usually leave it somewhere a month or so after buying it!

The following is from a chemist (me) and relates specifically to Ultra Pure which I found is the most stable so that's what I buy. Other oils may not be as stable as Ultra Pure due to the differences in olefin content.

The CAS number from the Ultra Pure MSDS indicates it is a mixture of long chain synthetic C14-C20 alkenes which in the presence of air and light/heat they can undergo photochemical/thermal mediated oxidation. What happens chemically is the double bond(s) in the oil can be cleaved by oxygen and the resulting aldehydes formed are what gives the rancid smell. They are typically more volatile due to their lower molecular weight and are often known as a stinky class of organic compounds. They also can darken the oil as aldehydes are even more reactive than the starting oil.

A couple of comments...1. don't use oil if it smells rancid as it likely does not have the lubricating capability you want for your horn and 2. keep any oil out of the light and heat with the cap on to minimize oxygen dissolution into the oil from air.

By the way Ultra Pure has never gone rancid on me while several other ones have ....but note that is just my experience.

i use synthetic and got a large order of hetman 1 over a decade ago and still using the oil with no apparent ill effects. it is stored in a cool dark area and the oil bottle is opaque white which is a sound idea.

After a 14 year separation from trumpet, I found 2 bottles of Spacefiller in my Benge case when I decided on the comeback route. Not being a wasteful person, I used them! No problems! Spacefiller is still my goto. Not easy to find anymore but Musicians Friend keeps it in inventory and I keep buying it!

The Spacefiller TS Tuning Slide lube is fantastic and long-lasting too!

Good heavens, just playing that should make you immune to anything!

I checked all my bottles of valve oil, and couldn't find an expiration or use best by date anywhere. There is no way of knowing how long that "new" bottle you just bought has been sitting on the shelf. If it works just use it.

That smell you described could just be that brand's odor.I haven't used it in a long time, but I do remember Holton valve oil having a distinctive smell.
