Hello,

two weeks ago i took a lesson. At the end i felt like playing a ballad would be a nice thing to end the lesson. We played my favourite ballad Body And Soul.
I always record myself on gigs and sometimes when i practice to check what i'm playing. So i did on this lesson.
In most cases i like only small parts of what i've played.
But i really like this version.

The first 8 bars contain the purest music ever coming out of my horn.

I'd be very happy about comments and constructive criticism.

Tobias

Hi Tobias,

Which of the trumpeters was you? (I'm guessing one was your teacher?).

Whatever the case, it sounded nice and I'd be happy hearing it at a jazz club.

Ballads are tough obviously. What it missed was the ability to "engage me". Listeners need familiarity I believe. It can be by way of creating a small motif, and then repeating it, and maybe modifying it. The second time they hear it they were familiar with it and it grabs their attention. (Composers use motifs, and for good reason).

This is why I also believe in grabbing licks from our "forefathers". They've created a language that we've grown used to as listeners. Without knowing it, I reckon we enjoy hearing the stuff that they've developed over the lat 100 years ago or so. (I didn't hear any cliche's). It's not a must of course, but I believe it helps.

Great sound and style though, and that's hard to teach!

Rob

Hi Tobias,

As you asked for constructive criticism, here are my thoughts (in particular on the first 8 bars):

The style and inflections are very nice, and you show a clear and accurate knowledge of the changes. There is much to be admired in what you played.

I would make a couple of observations though:

1) as has been touched on above; your lines sound a little rambling and, in my opinion, would benefit from more space (especially at the start of a solo) and more motivic development. It comes across a little academic at the moment.

2) your intonation is a bit dodgy. You were often very sharp and failed to adjust on some of the longer notes. Even when you improvise you have to have your ears open and be constantly adjusting your intonation, at least that is what the best players do...

3) this is not a judgement, as I have not heard you playing in other styles, but if I was your teacher I would want to check that your (very stylish!) use of an occasionally fragile and uncentered tone was purely a stylistic choice and not due to a technical deficiency. It sounds perfect in the style you are playing, but I would want to check that you were able to control it more in other styles.

Hope that can help.

All the best

Some really cool playing there, but I like to see more association with the melody of the piece. If you hadn't stated that it was Body and Soul I would have had no idea whatsoever of what the song was. But you are a damn fine player.

Thanks for you comments, guys.

@rob
My teacher only plays on the bridge in the first chorus. And he plays some backgrounds.
I work a lot on language and will continue to pursue this goal.

@LSOfanboy
I will pay more attention to my intonation in the future.
I kind of like my sound and don't think that it's uncentered.
But i know that i'm a much better musician than trumpetplayer.

Thanks again.

Tobias
