I have been using the first book. Helpful with phrasing and dynamics. I plan to get the second book. |

Use them both. Great for transposition practice as well as playing 'musically'. |

Hello,
I love these books. The first book is probably of more use to me as a teacher than any other book. I use it in 3 different ways.
1 - teaching the basics of how to play simple melodies with correct technique and musical phrasing
2 - teaching transposition
3 - teaching piccolo trumpet
I come back to this book time and time again.
Have fun!

I just got the second book by Getchell. On the first page, #65, I don't understand what the four 16th notes are for under the staff at measure two and four. |

#65 is the first time Getchell uses dotted eighth-sixteenth notes in one of his studies. The sixteenth notes underneath the dotted eighth-sixteenth are intended to help the student figure out the note values: the three tied sixteenth notes are the same duration as the dotted eighth note. |

When I was a freshman in high school, these 2 books are what put me from lousy player to above average. I used a metronome on each exercise and didn't move on until I thought it was solid.
These days I just use them to brush up on my cut time sight reading. If you have a hard sight reading gig coming up, attempt to read as many pages as you can in cut time. _________________ Bb 8310Z

Great books pound for pound. Trumpet players really need to lead by example regarding dotted eights and 16ths. The author likes to offer a mix of triplets and dotted eighth and sixteenths for contrast.
Those 16th notes under the notes are to reinforce the 3 to 1 ratio. The 16th should be long and slightly emphasized.
I am 2 teachers removed from Scholssberg and I believe I was taught some Vachianno Rules regarding dotted eigth-16ths. That 16th is a short little note and needs help.
If you want to hear great examples of properly played dotted 8th-16ths listen to our military bands. Daaa-TA da.
Merry Christmas,
Gordon Stump

The Getchell alto saxophone books are quite good for piccolo trumpet etudes if you think of them in C and D transposition. |
