Hello everyone!

I was wondering what everyone thought the "standard" rep for Trumpet Ensemble is. When speaking of Brass Quintet pretty much everyone can agree on a hand full of standards. Ewald. Die Bangel. Cheetham. Etc etc.

What do you think is standard for Trumpet Ensemble? What instrumentation are those works and can you play them with fewer players than recommended? Why are these pieces standard?

Hi,

Not sure if this is relevant to you still, but here is my take. I think 4 or more tpts make a trumpet ensemble. Certainly, you could perform trios and have people double. If you comb through JWpepper or SheetMusicPlus you'll find a wide selection of music for trumpet ensemble. Below you'll find some other alternatives to the two previously mentioned.

pieces to consider for trumpet ensemble:
Eric Ewazen: Fantasia for 7 Trumpets, Concert Fanfare, An Olcott Overture, Prelude and Fugue
Leila Fletcher: Fanfare of the Bells
David Marlett: Earthscape, Festival of Lights
Anthony Plog: Suite for 6 trumpets
Leroy Anderson: Woodbury Fanfare
Vaclav Nelhybel: Music for 6 trumpets
Franz von Suppe: Poet and Peasant Overture

Altenburg is standard for trumpet and timpani (kettle drum).
Even W.A. Mozart wrote a piece written for 6 or so tpts and flute.

There are also a ton of arrangements for 4-10 trumpets. Hope this was of some help to you if you were still interested in some rep.

You could always check out the plethora of National Trumpet Competition ensemble videos on Youtube. If a piece isn't listed anywhere for sale/rent, email the professor of the studio that plays it. There's a lot of folks making their own arrangements that won't be found on a major sheet music website.

That's a good point. I wouldn't have thought of that. Another resource to check out is

Raymond Burkhart Premiere Press

Dr. Burkhart is LA based and writes a lot of great stuff for brass.

Jay Lichtmann's site is another great source for music for trumpet ensemble. IMSLP is yet another resource for trumpet ensemble music, though you might have to transpose.

I thank you for that sentiment, but as I like to point out, with some exception, the only reason that the files I have posted are popular is because they are FREE.

If one had to pay for this stuff you would be signing a different tune!

I have been uploading more and more sample score pages onto our website if you want to take a look. Any item with a green "look inside" button has a PDF. Any items WITHOUT samples that "ship in 24 hours" are in stock and I can usually send you preview pages if you have any specific requests. Just give me a shout. - Peter
