Gorgeous playing!
I've got a question for you Derek - your list shows 2 principal trumpet players for that period (Tom Stevens and Robert DiVall) - any idea who might be playing first in this recording?
Cheers,

According to Ralph Sauer's post above, Tom Stevens played 1st trumpet on Mvts. 1 and 2 and Robert DiVall played 1st trumpet on Mvts. 3 and 5.

Someone recently pointed to this thread. I read about these Sheffield recordings, searched them out on the internet, and ordered both CDs (gold CD, 20bit transfer). They arrived today and I am enjoying listening to them.
Thanks for the recommendations!
For anyone who is interested in these, searching eBay I could only find them listed at $49 a piece. A place called TownHall Records (google them) has them for $21 a piece which is where I bought them. I believe that you can download them through Amazon for $8.99 each, but I still prefer having a physical copy.

They're coming to Korea this fall.
I'm looking forward to meeting them! _________________ Scherzer 8211 Bb

That Mahler 5th recording is kind of a fluke. As I understand it Stevens played 1st trumpet and recorded the first two movements and then got hit in the chops and couldn't play well enough to record the rest of it. One of the doberman pinschers he owned jumped up as he was leaning down, and the top of the dogs head hit him straight-on on the chops.
Let that be a lesson to you all, get a small dog! _________________ In his retirement he had become that most dreaded of former athletes, the one who always remembered how much harder it was in his day "when ships were made of wood and men were made of steel."

Old thread, I know, but I've recently been listening to both LA Phil Appalachian Spring recordings, Mehta and Bernstein, and I'm curious if anybody knows whether it was Stevens on both? The sound/style is so different on these, but I know some of that is just the conductor/recording engineer etc. I assume Stevens was probably 1st on the Mehta (from 1976?), and it appears the Bernstein recording was done in 1982 in San Francisco at Davies Hall?! (according to Bernstein's website). Wonder why. Anyway if it was Stevens I find it very interesting how different he sounds... |

I have it on reasonably good authority that Bob Divall played the Mehta and Tom played the Bernstein. _________________ Jim Wilt

Oh fantastic, many thanks for the reply! Did the orchestra tour up to SF regularly back then? I remember that Venetian Brass Album they did with the SF brass...(no reason to know this really, it's just so interesting to me a major recording would be made in another orchestra's hall) |

We do get up there fairly regularly, and yes, it is pretty unusual to record in another city. _________________ Jim Wilt
