Hello Trumpet World!

I'm curious about the Bach 1D. Are there any professional players out there that have experience with this mouthpiece? Have you ever used it for Orchestral pops?

I appreciate your thoughts!

Dave

Im not a full time pro, but maybe I can help.

I have a 1D top that I made up with my personal rim. The stock 1D rim is kind of sharp, if i recall correctly. It reminded me of the 1B rim. It's not particularly shallow, only a little shallower than a 3c cup. More of a "booster" mouthpiece, a little tighter and a little brighter. I use it mostly on for D trumpet when others use piccolo.

The 76 backbore that comes stock on the 1D is a little tighter than the stock 10 backbore and has a pretty bright, focused sound. I recall it not working to well on my 229L C trumpet, but that doesn't mean it wont work for you. I tend to like larger backbores in general.

Hope this helps a little.

I heard Mike Sachs occasionally uses his "magic" Bach 1E mouthpiece on some things...

Well, if you use one you'll be in good company. Adolph Herseth occasionally used 1D and even 1E underparts.

I think you'd be best off getting a screw rim set up with a 1D underpart matched up to a copy of your main mouthpiece's rim, as the 1D rim has a different shape than the 1C, 1B or 1X rims (not sure which you normally use).

Cheers,

John

Thanks for the replies, friends. Worth a shot, I think. Perhaps it will end up being another tool in the toolbox.

Happy New Year!!

Bach puts a large backbore on the E cup.

I think that's why a 1D would be a potential pops mouthpiece, but a 1E may not. The 76 backbore in the 1D is tighter than a stock 10, while the 1E comes with the rather huge 117 backbore. I know I use a 1D for just that, and would never use a 1E as the larger backbore negates some of the shallower cup advantages.
