I've a chronically sticky valve. It was fine when I played regularly ... in the 1970s. The horn went unused for a very long time. What I've done is cleaned it and washed it with oil and taken care not to mix brands. It's good for a while but after an hour or so it sticks again. What would be the next level of cleaning?

Does it stick mostly on long notes? Every time or just once in a while after the sticking returns?

One thing to try is a thicker or thinner oil. Berpbio oil helped my sticky valves on an old strad. Yamaha and hetmans also produce a thicker vintage oil.

I have often been very frustrated getting old horns and having sticky valves. After much irritation and many cleanings and valve oil switches I discovered that in a lot of horns that have sat for years there has developed kind of a ring inside the valve casing right where the valve ends in the up position. If you take the valve out and dry out the casing you can usually see with a flashlight or feel it with your pinky finger. I assume this is just oxidation from being exposed for many years. Anyhow takes some extra effort to get off but for me has cured the problem in several tough cases.

If a horn has been sitting for a long time, there is likely dried crud, oxidation, and God only knows what else in the valves.

A competent tech can hone those valves right up for you in a jiffy, probably while you wait if you call ahead.
