I heard him playing lead in the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra in NYC a few months ago. He was smiling the whole time just as he is in this video. Like someone completely in control and digging every second of it. He nailed everything and made it sound effortless.

He appears to have the chart memorized in the video. I got the same feeling in his performance with the orchestra, either memorized or very, very familiar with the charts.

He knew them so well that you could see his lips moving as he sang along with all the sax solis and gave cues for the trombone entrances. They couldn't see him, of course, because their backs were to him--he appeared to be doing it just to amuse himself.

He also counted off all the tunes.

Nick is an extremely fine player. I've heard him many times with the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra. Great sound, super accurate and it all looks effortless. He would be an excellent role model for aspiring lead players.

What’s that chart he’s playing on the video? Cherry Juice?

My wife & I had the pleasure of seeing him this month at the Village Vanguard also, along with Scott Wendholdt, Terell Stafford & John Chudoba in the VV Big Band. Everything you said about him is right on. Excellent playing, great sound, seemed to know everyone's parts, and looked like he was having the best time. His father taught Lee Morgan & Randy Brecker, so it's no surprise Nick plays so well. Does Nick do Skype lessons?

The VV BB couldn't have been more different from the Mingus Big Band, which we saw the same night at the Jazz Standard. The Vanguard Band is extremely tight, and a tad polite compared to the Mingus BB, which is loose & raucous, as befits Mingus. The trumpeters were Tatum Greenblatt & Alex Norris. I couldn't identify the 3rd trumpeter, who I think played lead most of the night. Whenever we go to NY, we always see whatever Mingus aggregation is appearing at the Jazz Standard. We've been doing that since the early 90s, when they were downstairs at the Fez Lounge in the Time Cafe.

How cool is it to see 2 great big bands in one night? I love NYC!

Played alongside Nick in Phila before he left for Mannes. He was only about 18, and already killing it. Even then, he made it look and sound easy. Very nice guy too.

Hilarious!
Glad I took the time to watch that.

Classic lead trumpet mentality.

Practicing a release on a myriad of sophisticated scales, LOL
And, "I think this chart sucks". Funny.
This is not only fun, but subtly insightful at times.

Here's another Cat who really plays:
