Does anyone know where i can take my horn to have a stop rod put on. Its a vintage Holton 48 and the slides work great just too great to where they almost fall off half the time when im not playing and just listening to my BD talk lol.

Lol love the idea but i was hoping for a more elegant solution than that! Gave me a good chuckle but it should help for the short term solution!

I would think that any repair shop in your area can do this.

That being said, I second the alternative suggestion. On my horns that don't have a 3rd valve slide stop, I use a piece of twine. It simple solution that doesn't alter my vintage horns. And no tarnish from using a rubber band.

For example, my 1980 Bach CML Trumpet ...

Not if the horn is silver. The sulphur in the rubber will cause deep tarnish. Hair ties are often recommended. A string could also be used.

I use a Yamaha Trumpet Silicone Slide Stopper, https://www.amazon.com/Yamaha-Trumpet-Silicone-Slide-Stopper/dp/B01FCCYXE4 . Eleven bucks.

Some builders/techs/experienced players say adding a third-valve slide stop messes with the acoustical properties of the original design. For me the deficits of adding a metal slide stopper is voodoo acoustical science (placebo effect) but there are some very credible people taking another views. It's something to consider first, though.

You want elegant? Monette can sell you a $1000 hair tie for your slide!

I heard the Monette hair ties come with a constant pitch center, making them well worth the $1000 price tag.

I had a Schilke S42 that I stupidly decided to have the third (and first slide) rings replaced with heavy rings that Andy Taylor uses on some of his horns, strictly for the feel and appearance (stupid!)
It was done by a well known horn rebuilder in Indiana, I do NOT blame him, he just did what I asked.

I don’t know exactly why, but the horn COMPLETELY changed, it became noticeably tighter to the point of stuffiness.

No more messing with third slides for me.

It may not work on every horn, but on my Conn 28A I've used two zip ties, one on the bottom of the main tuning slide and the other on the third valve slide. Clip off the excess ribbon and position the heads/pawls so that they collide when the slide is out as far as you want it to go. Don't make it too tight; you can rotate one of the tie heads out of the way to remove the slide. I'd post a picture if I could. It's much more elegant than twine...

hair ties:

https://www.amazon.com/Hair-Elastics-40mm-2mm-REUSEABLE/dp/B01HAMKYV0/ref=pd_rhf_ee_s_rp_0_3?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B01HAMKYX8&pd_rd_r=19848764-dc91-4be3-a227-cdcff46c4dec&pd_rd_w=JGdq9&pd_rd_wg=lbr64&pf_rd_p=2f64e549-0497-4586-8c63-7905e90fd6a2&pf_rd_r=SD1K891ANZE9ZJ3N9W9Y&refRID=SD1K891ANZE9ZJ3N9W9Y&th=1

Then for a more permanent solution, there are many good repair techs that could fit a small slide stop to your trumpet.. Dr Valve, Osmun Music, and probably someone near you.

Yamaha do a silicon band, which doesn’t discolour silver trumpets. If you look at any of Trent Austin videos you can see them in use.

Those look like copies of the retainers on Getzen's back in the 1980's. Don't know if they still issue them today's models. I bought one of the Getzen retainers to use on a Bundy and had to open up the size of the holes to fit properly. It all depends on the size on the braces used on the Yamahas.

Be careful if you use hair ties also, I used one that was rubber underneath the outer cloth cover, apparently because it was stretched the rubber must have contacted the silver and left permanent black marks on the silver of my Benge.
