After a long 'career' of playing I found myself burnt out and not interested in the horn anymore. That was about five years ago. Recently I've been feeling the urge to play again and got ahold of an inexpensive cornet and started practicing.
Unfortunately, I started experiencing severe pain in the ear, jaw, and teeth on the left side of my head. At its worst it felt like TMJ, a serious toothache, and a bad ear infection with a headache, all at once.
So it seems that I've become afflicted with something called Trigeminal Neuralgia which is a nerve disorder that causes pain to the ear, jaw, teeth, and head on one side of the face. It's triggered by things like chewing, talking, and in my case playing.
So I guess it's time to tune up that old electric bass that I've had laying around for years and see if I can make some progress on it.
ciao.

I know all about neurological problems, Keith, so can empathize. Best wishes. And good luck with that bass.

Wow, that sucks. Hopefully you can find something else fulfilling to take its place.

Making music is the goal, by whatever means necessary. That is the release, the joy, the desire.

Rock that bass, or keyboards, or percussion, whatever works.

A friend has had to put down the trumpet now for 5 months, due to Bell's palsy.

He absolutely kills on harmonica, can improvise his ass off, but every rehearsal, gives me a progress report on his returning to trumpet. For him, is a passion, and I pray for him daily that he gets back to where he wants to be.

He still has that fire to play, if that has passed for you, let it go and move on.

If it is still a burning passion, give it a few months and pick it up again. If there is the same pain, put it back in the case and go pull some strings.
