I assume that his Northern California students were monthly. Were his LA students weekly, monthly? A mix? _________________ Schilke, Kanstul, Benge, Getzen |

I'm pretty sure everyone was monthly on their regular schedule, however there may be some special exceptions if someone was having problems in LA. I think I read that Paul Cacia had more frequent lessons when he was working through some stuff. Claude did spend a week every month in the Bay and another in Vegas. I think he might've had another city for awhile, maybe Phoenix.

Claude gave students lessons every other week and charged $50 per lesson until around 1980 at which point he went to lessons once every four weeks and also then upped the fee to $75 per lesson ($162 adjusted for inflation) in order to reduce the number of players on the waiting list. It was understood though that if you had any troubles with your playing or the assigned practice routine he would schedule an extra lesson in between if needed.
I am not sure when Claude did lessons in Vegas or Phoenix (Eric's post above it news of that to me). I know that during the 80's at least until he lost his Airman's Medical Certificate due to heart surgery and could no longer fly his Cessna, he divided his time equally between the studio at 19522 Leadwell Street in Reseda (in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles), and the music store up in Northern California (San Mateo?). He'd spend the week at one location, then would fly home to be with his wife at their home in Big Bear, California through the weekend, then fly to the other location for the next week's lessons. He would also fly (himself) to Universities all over the country to perform Masterclasses which sometimes caused a delay in our next lesson. Dr. Larry Miller (trptdoc on the TH) likened what Claude did to ""shuttle" trumpet instruction" in the Preface to Claude's book Brass Playing Is No Harder Than Deep Breathing, published by Carl Fischer.
Best wishes,
John Mohan

In the mid to late 60s Claude gave me lessons every two weeks. Each lesson was $20. I remember he used to enter the payments by hand into a ledger.

Good times!
I remember one time around 1985 when Pete Bresciani drove in from Vegas with his wife Nancy for his monthly lesson and Claude didn't answer the door. They came to my house and we went back over to Claude's and we were worried something had happened to him. So we broke a window to get inside. I don't remember now if Claude was inside and just asleep, or more likely he came driving up and had just forgotten Pete's lesson time. I do remember he was a little grumpy about the broken window (just a little), but what were we to do?
Best wishes,
John |

I probably have almost all of those ledgers. What's your last name Jon? I bid on those in an auction a couple years ago. It was fun to see various names and things in that ledger. I also have all his calendars and various names on his waiting list.
I used that info to compile the list of students on this page combined with info from other people. Look for any names that need to be on that list.

There was a point during the late '70's / early '80's when every major hotel show's lead trumpet player was a Claude Gordon student. |

I have a student who is principal trumpet of the LV Symphony that has been there and played shows since the early 80s. He has mentioned names before. I will ask him more. He knows Mike Paulson and Carl and some other guys from when the casinos all had bigger groups with more trumpets.
