Hey Flugelhorn lovers!

Check out this video comparing the NEW Taylor Phat Puppy compact Flugelhorn vs. the Taylor Standard Flugelhorn. The goal here was to hear the horn's sound compared to each other. Everything is the same...Studio, microphone (AKG C1000s), EQ, reverb, mouthpiece and backing track. The only difference is the horn. You can easily get them to sound alike by using different mouthpieces but as I said that was not the goal. Enjoy!

As usual Bill...NICE, tasty playing!! I like the standard...BUT...I have to say...I'm kind of leaning more to the "Puppy"!!!! Still sounds like a flugel but maybe has a little more clarity??? Hard to really explain why...I just like it!!

Yeah the 'Pupster' seems pretty groovy!

The lens distortion gave me a good idea for Andy's next creation... Slide Flugel!!

Great sound as always Bill! The "problem" is your comparisons aren't really representative of what other players are likely to experience - it's clear a lot of your sound comes from your unique embouchure. I've specifically listened to videos of other players on Andy Taylor flugels to compare their sound to yours and even allowing for differences in recording gear and environment, I don't know if I've ever heard someone with a sound as mellow and dusky as yours.

Wow, what a great post, and what a great way to compare two instruments. I'm really hearing more similarities than differences between the two. If I don't watch the video, I'm not able to tell which you are playing.

Great comparison. Thanks. They are close, but I would say that the Pup is a little clearer or brighter. Really great to hear this comparison.
