I just won an ebay bid for a Holton by Leblanc - T602 with serial number 210363, which according to Holton Loyalist puts it at around 1913 which was 50 years before Leblanc bought them. I then noticed that the stenciling on the horn, where it says Holton By Leblanc, seems kind of off (see link to bid below if it works)

I'm assuming that this is after Conn bought them and serial number reset?

This trumpet is for my son who was renting a Rossetti. I was told Rossetti is junk which is why I was looking for an economical used trumpet....just hope I didn't end up with a piece of junk to call our own.

Thanks for any input!

You have purchased a fine instrument from the 1990's. All Holton branded horns are great. Congratulations on the purchase of an awesome trumpet

Thanks Dennis! That's good to hear. Hopefully my son will stick with it and put it to good use.

I'm glad you didn't go the shiny Amazon cheap horn. I am a Holton fan and collector and your son now has a real chance at successful trumpeting

That was the same model I started playing on, a very usable horn up through intermediate years. You got what should be a good trumpet.

Bumping a 4 year old thread as a new poster - I hope you don't mind, was hoping to keep context for a model that doesn't seem to have a lot of exposure here.

This is another "looking for a horn for 10 yo" post. Options include a Holton LeBlanc T602 S/N 942979 for AUD 220 (approx US$160). Seems to be about 16 years old, in very good shape and seller seems genuine having bought it new.

A bit out of my way, so is it a good starting horn and worth the look and play?

Oh he's been playing for 4 weeks, now in one of the school bands, is Grade 5 piano with 2 older brothers who play French Horn, Clarinet, Tenor Sax and Piano - so likely to be a stayer. His school horn is a Bach TR600 which makes a reasonable trumpet-like noise.

It would be a fantastic trumpet to start with. I’ve had a few. Some of the best valves ever

If in good working order, that will be an excellent horn to learn on.

TL;DR

Bought it for A$200. It's a terrific horn. In superb condition, a very small ding in the bell, valves are smooth and fast. I had a quick blow, it sounds lovely, blows freely and was just "fun".

The horn in question:

Full story:

Went to have a look, everything seemed great. Valves smooth, slides clean and moving well. Inserted the mouthpiece, blew - and hit a wall. Bugger. Looks like this isn't a bargain anymore. Anyway, pulled the valves out, and they were completely mis-aligned. Did a rough reinsertion, and got sound. OK not much to lose, offered $200 which he took.

On the way home, dropped into Ozwinds to buy a Yamaha 14B4 MPC (advice from teacher), and showed the salesperson the horn. He thought the black nylon collars had gone missing, which was why the valves could be turned even when inserted.

Mmmm.

Got it home with a torch. Realised there's a tiny notch, and so long as you line it up properly with the keyway in the valve housing - perfect. Whew.

Here's the valve guide:

Put on a MPC, and just wow.

Hi all,

Just wanted to post an update. Our son is now 15, and has been promoted to the top Concert Band and top Big Band at school. This trumpet has had a long life, and is getting close to the end of it - red rot sneaking in, and 3rd valve is getting more difficult to keep moving smoothly. (Edited - methinks the damage to the horn was its 15 odd years being unused and with incorrectly aligned valves)

Despite its issues - it's been a terrific maker of music, and if you're reading this as a parent who's spotted one on FB Marketplace or eBay, probably worth a punt if the seller seems to have looked after it.

Very good horns.

I have several Holtons; mainly, collectable/vintage.
However; I have a T602. Play it regularly.
