did anybody mention Tom Harrell yet? I was just listening to Time's Mirror - he's another one who's got a sweet sound on flugel... |

I'm with you, Mr. Rogers... Kenny Wheeler's sound in both gorgeous & all his own -- something that jazz players strive for their entire careers. Plus, he's got the big picture ALL happening at once -- his writing also fits his "voice" on the horn perfectly.
This is somethiing that I truly respect about Kenny Wheeler -- from the first note on his recordings, you know exactly who ho is, from his horn sound to his writing (no matter who the players are or what the instrumentation is on any particular track or record)...

He's a terrific player. I really liked his "Island," with Bob Brookmeyer, which came out a couple of years ago -- it includes a DVD with session footage and interviews, which adds a lot.
Those two guys actually motivated me to take up valve trombone, after having played the slide instrument for upwards of 30 years. I'll always play slide 'bone, but I like the softer, somewhat fluegelhorn-ish tone that the valve trombone lends itself to.
Anyhow, "Island" is highly recommended!

I've been listening to Woody play flugelhorn all day, and I really dig his sound on that instrument. He played one of those weird shaped bach flugels. I usually can't get into playin' flugel, but hearing woody's concept on that instrument has got me thinking twice. |

Just my $0.02...
Chuck Mangione gave the Flugelhorn more visibility than anyone else (even if he was a little sharp in the upper register).
Roy Hargrove is GREAT on Moment by Moment.
Rick Braun sounds AMAZING playing "Over the Rainbow" on the Golden Slumbers CD.
Tony Guererro also sounds FANTASIC on Flugel.
Dan Oxley has a real PURE tone quality.
Randy Brecker is also GREAT.
Chet Baker sounded EXCELLENT on Flugel.
Wayne Bergeron is also SOLID on Flugel.
(Strap in all of you Botti haters)...
Chris Botti sounds really nice on "Embraceable You" and "When I Fall in Love"...Oh...yah...that's right...I forgot...it's the sound he gets on a TRUMPET not a Flugelhorn. _________________ God Bless,

I agree with whoever mentioned Bobby Shew. Another that ought to be on the list is Carl Saunders. These are guys who bring out the essence of flugelhorn sound. |

Hi folks
As you are mentioning Kenny Wheeler.......
Kenny was in the Eclipse workshops on Friday picking up an Eclipse Flugel.
He is now off to Canada for a tour over there, try and go see him if you are anywhere near those gigs.
Best Wishes

Walt Fowler gets my vote. Listen to Steve Gadd's album, "70 Strong."

All of these sounds, each beautiful in its own right, seems to me to have a concept of a deeper and fuller trumpet sound. An extension of the trumpet.
I tend, for me personally, to think of the flugelhorn as a separate instrument. Of course it depends on if it is a personal, soloistic sound vs. sectional sound, but my role model is Shorty Rogers, not mentioned here
One note and you know t's Shorty. Granted it's a more nasally sound than others but it's right up my alley. _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Bird

Maynard had a nice flugel sound at one time. After the mid to late 70's as his playing began to decline his flugel sound seemed to change.
Ballad For Max on MF Horn 1 and The Valachi Papers from MF Horn 3 are good examples.
Warren Vache has a nice Flugel sound as well. He doesn't play it too much but when he does he sounds great. Warren would sound great playing a garden hose.
Another name I don't recall seeing is Thad Jones. |

You know, I was floored by Roy Hargrove's flugel sound on "Speak Low" from the album Earfood. Let me say up front that I have seen Roy live multiple times, for better or for worse. RIP
With that said, the Speak Low cut was so digitally manipulated that it may or may not have reflected Roy exactly.
Til Bronner can have a really fat sound on flugel. And he can and does sound that way live. |

Haven't heard nearly enough players on flugel, but Bobby Shew, in my mind, has the perfect sound for it. I just love how much he embraces the mellowness of the instrument. Undoubtedly, there are many others that can match his sound quality on it.
Just heard Freddie's flugel sound for the frist time.... it sounds like a trumpet with an extra phat sound. It's really good. In fact, I didn't even know a sound like that was POSSIBLE on flugel.... simply amazing.
Just heard Roy Hargrove on flugel for the first time... wow, it's so very warm. _________________ Trumpet is for extroverts only... no, wait... Trumpet is also for introverts who need an avenue for extrovertism! |

There are a lot of incredible musicians that have a beautiful flugelhorn sound.
Tom Harrell sounds great! Miles sounded really good when he played the Martin Committee flugelhorn on a couple of albums. I think all of the players listed in all of the above responses sound great on flugelhorn even though they have their unique sound.
I got to see Roy Hargrove live many times, for better, for worse, and for better again. For me it is Roy! Roy loved playing ballads and it showed in his playing.
R.I.P. Roy! _________________ Several Trumpets and Flugelhorns!

And a pretty good trumpet soloist and arranger. My favorite album at age 11 was Jazz Waltz and is still among the best to me. I picked up a lot of sound tricks listening to that album that I didn’t hear much in school band.
