I've been thinking of hearing a nice tune featuring a Bach 37. I think Woody Shaw played a Bach 37 in "There will never be another you." I was thinking though what a Bach 37 might sound like on a tune like "I remember Clifford" or "Body and soul."
Anybody have recordings on video of a Bach 37 playing any of these ballads?
Let me know if you are able.

I ran in to Woody in Giardinelli's in the late '70's and we discussed his horns and mouthpieces. He was playing a Bach 43 model and a Bach 182 flugel BOTH with Bach 5C mouthpieces. He said he didn't like the 37 bell. FWIW!

Thanks for the reply. I just haven't gotten to be on the listening end with Bach 37.
Perhaps I'll go with a 6310z Bobby Shew trumpet. Seems to hold up well in the upper register.

I'm thinking about it now and you seem to be telling the truth. I guess the 6310z can not play in this time signature. It still may be a fair trade considering the Bobby Shew horn has a great sound and it seems to guide the player.

Ahhh, but you can’t do a decent slur from Db to F on a Schilke....it’s all about compromises.... |

Back to the OP, I'm 90% sure that Wynton was still playing on his Bach 37 on this album, in fact it may be the last one he made on that horn. https://youtu.be/kzK4_3MFvaE

| Thing is, I could buy Wynton's old Bach 37, play Wynton's mouthpiece, then switch to whatever Monette Wynton is playing now.....and there isn't a chance in Hades that I'm ever going to play like the dude. Pretty much everyone here knows that though......right? |

Wynton sounded great as always. A true fan of jazz music. You can tell that it's part of who he is! I was impressed.

Wynton played a standard weight 72. |

If we could put Clifford Brown, Chet Baker, Lee Morgan, Kenny Dorham, Blue Mitchell, Doc Severinsen, Arturo Sandoval, Claudio Roditi, Woody Shaw, Freddie Hubbard and Maynard Ferguson all in the same room at the same time playing the exact same thing on the exact same Model 37 you'd hear 11 different sounds. Which one is "the 37 sound?" The answer is "All of them."
Plus, if you were listening to a recording of each of them there's no guarantee that the recording would sound the same as hearing them live.
So the idea that you can definitively evaluate a horn on the basis of a recording by some artist isn't realistic.
