First prepare a proper staff with time signature and bar lines.
Then, write it out as quarter notes tied to eighth notes
or
3 eighth notes tied together
And observe the bar lines, which separate one measure from another, when you write it out and play or hum it.
And tap your foot or hand.
Your foot will go down to start the first note, and it will go up to start the next note, then down on the 3rd note, etc. By "note" I mean your quarter-eighth ties, or 3-eighth ties, or dotted quarters. All the same total length. _________________ 1938 Martin Handcraft Imperial #2 bore, 38 bell

If the time signature is 6/8 or some other x/8 , then each dotted quarter is ONE beat.
If the time signature is 3/4, then the intent is to have the TWO dotted quarters played evenly in 1 3-beat measure.
Something similar is notation of 'triplet quarter notes' played in 2 beats of a x/4 time signature.

KNOW (see) what the next note is BEFORE you have to play it.
PLAY the next note 'on time' and 'in rhythm'.
Oh ya, watch the conductor - they set what is 'on time'. |
