This should remind us to be very attentive and aware of hearing injury.
AND to be willing to refuse exposure to highly dangerous situations. In the case of a professional orchestra, I imagine that a 'union rep' could get involved in a situation as described in the ROH article.
I'll put a pair of disposable foam ear plugs in my case right now - so they're available if ever needed! And be willing to 'walk away' if necessary.

I recently played a gig where the bone player was up a step behind me with his horn blasting directly into my right ear.
I got out my musicians ear plugs and put in the right. The sound problem was solved, but playing with plugs is different and takes some effort to adjust to. |
