I'm in Wisconsin this week and have an appointment at the Edwards shop. Really curious about the X series.
Advice on what to think about, try, ask, learn would be very welcome!

no advice, only a request
Was looking into the Edwards X-series myself, but closed place to test them out is about 6 hours driving.
And since there is not that much info/reviews to be found on the net, it would be nice to have a short review of the X-13, X-17 and X-27.
More specific why one definately should consider the Edwards alongside the usual suspects like Bach Strad, Yamaha Xeno, Schilke etc. _________________ Trumpet : Yamaha YTR-9335CHS + Yamaha YTR-6335H

Take your regular trumpet so you can do 'side by side' comparisons in the test area.
In addition to the typical tests of things such as: range, valve action, ergonomics, feel, sound quality, etc. I also suggest paying attention to the amount of physical (air) effort needed to get the desired results. And if possible, play long enough so you begin to get fatigued.

KNOW (see) what the next note is BEFORE you have to play it.
PLAY the next note 'on time' and 'in rhythm'.
Oh ya, watch the conductor - they set what is 'on time'. |

What to try? I'd suggest the X-13 and the X-17 Bb trumpets -- both wonderful horns -- along with whatever else is available. The Gen 4 C trumpet is also a really nice horn, along the lines of a Bach 239 if I recall correctly. I haven't played the Edwards flugelhorn or cornet, but suspect they are worth giving a try as well.
You might also give the Griego-Ashton mouthpieces a try. Some interesting designs.
Also, Getzen is just two buildings away from Edwards. If possible, give their 80th anniversary Bb trumpets -- the 900DLX and the 907DLX -- a try. The 900DLX is a terrific, versatile lead/commercial horn, and I suspect that the 907DLX is an equally good all-around horn. The Getzen 3070 C trumpet is a really nice horn along the lines of a Bach 229. The Getzen Custom cornet and flugelhorn are also really nice horns. The 3051 Bb trumpet has a beautiful full, lush sound.
Lots of great horns to try in Elkhorn, WI!
Have fun. |

My X-13 is one of the most responsive trumpets I've ever played - and I've played hundreds of trumpets in my work. The first time I tried one at ITG in Anaheim, I was hooked.
It's a remarkable instrument. _________________ "Strive for tone." -John Coppola

I concur, slowly selling off other horns in “trumpet orchard” that are no longer being used once I started playing the X-13, a very versatile horn for me.
Savor your time, relax and enjoy the experience! |

Thanks to Adam Getzen everyone at our Chicago-area Trumpet Hang had a chance to test Getzen and Edwards horns including some of the new Getzen Deluxe trumpets and the Edwards X-13.
We were impressed with them all! _________________ Jim Hatfield

Adam, thanks to you and Christan for a wonderful, memorable visit to Edwards and Getzen.
I can’t say enough good things. So I’ll summarize for others after some travel this coming week. Suffice it to say the advice above was helpful :-) _________________ "When you hear music, after it's over, it's gone in the air. You can never capture it again." -- Dolphy |
