I have heard that the intonation is better to play D above the staff as open instead of 1? Is this true?

I believe it depends on the horn but open works better for me.

I think it depends on the player, mouthpiece and horn in combination. D above the staff can be a finicky note. I'm strictly an improvisational player and when I land on that D I'm usually not there for long so my priority is hitting it cleanly with consistency. For me that means using the first valve. For me it slots more securely that way than playing it open.

That being said I'm seeing players using alternate fingerings all through their range and you can't tell from just listening, so it's what works best for you.

Playing high D open, or High C# with 2, are both often advantageous options, making use of the 9th harmonic. This harmonic naturally sits about 4¢ higher than where we'd find it in equal temperament. Since many horns have pattern intonation issues resulting in some upper staff notes falling a little lower, these alternate fingerings thus offer a harmonic solution to some of the 'fight' that certain horns may put up there.

I recently played a run of "Little Shop of Horrors" and played every single high D open, and all but three high C#/Dbs with 2 - those exceptions having to do with where the note falls in a chord.

Depending on the C trumpet, I've found the high (concert) D for Alpine Symphony best with 1 on some horns, and open on others. Similarly with the high Dbs in Concerto for Orchestra.

As our community has already mentioned - what works for you, your equipment, and your musical environment is all that matters. The internet will not resolve this issue, as it involves options, not absolutes. As Duke Ellington said, "If it sounds good, it is good!"

Happy practicing, all the way up the staff,

-DB

I play it open almost all of the time.

If your tendency is to be sharp in that register, then playing it 1st valve may work out better. Otherwise, it's a lot closer to being in tune played open, and generally open notes respond better. I'm surprised by how many people insist on playing it first valve.

I usually play it 1st valve in both Bb and C but weirdly enough just 3rd valve also works really well on my C trumpet. Not sure what's going on there but it sounds good.

Why do we need to get worked up or mention this every time? The site requires that we post 5 times before listing an item...everyone who lists anything for sale on this site has had to make 5 posts, it doesn't make the intent unworthy
