Hi,
I'm looking for a backup horn for playing some dixieland and there is a Yamaha 234 cornet in great shape in a store not far from me.
It looks like a model that was only sold in Japan and maybe during the late 1980's.
Anyone here played it before?
Well, maybe I'll check it out in a few days, but right now I'd like to know about the model 234 designation specs. Does the number 4 indicate a large bore cornet?

According to the Yamaha model list 0.462, that means the second generation (of design) of cornets (the former ones had a 0.463 bore).
Probably a very good cornet depending on condition (it's made up to 1982).
The 4 in 234 is only an indication of a special (for Japan only?) model.
The 231, the 232, the 233 and the 234 are all in Yamaha's large bore (0.462 or 0.463) but that's in the cornet world certainly not a large bore (think more from 0.468 to 0.485), it's in fact for cornets a ML bore.
The 4 means only large bore in the 4 digit instrument codes by Yamaha (like 6335 = ML vs 6345 = L).
In trumpetland you can call a 0.462 or 0.463 a large bore but even that is not general. The Benge 0.464 bore was called a ML+ bore which I prefer as an indication. |
