First time poster here.

A friend recently sent me some mouthpieces he described as traditional cornet mouthpieces. I've tried using them in a Bach Strad cornet I've been borrowing, but they don't fit the receiver. They don't go in far enough. My trumpet professor said they look like flugel pieces to him, but they don't work well in a flugel either.

They're a Reynolds 6A and an Olds 14. Have cornet receivers changed or do I just have some oddities that only fit horns made by the same manufacturer?

Some makers made different sized recievers.. If I remember, some of the earlier models of Olds cornets had a larger receiver...

spend a little cash and buy a new mouthpiece, Curry and Pickett a top my list.

Old mouthpieces are good curiosities, unless they are in rare excellent condition IMO better for your chops to have a new/clean mouthpiece

Yes, cornet tapers have changed over the years. It can take a bit of effort when mixing and matching vintage horns and/or mouthpieces. And it sounds like you're dealing with a couple of older mouthpieces.

Probably It's an older shank design @ .365, used by Olds.

The FL shank starts at .355"
Cornet shank at .341"

The engagement difference from the Cornet to .365 Cornet would be about .48" almost 1/2 inch.

From Flugelhorn to cornet the engagement difference would be .28" a little over 1/4" or about 7mm.

I had some trouble getting a Yamaha short shank mouthpiece into a Bach Strad cornet that I recently tried. It did fit in but not naturally and the blow just didn't feel quite right.
