I saw this on the local craigslist--it's a pretty good Bach 37 at a reasonable price, but appears to have a previous owner's name engraved inside in fairly large letters. I'm just curious if there's an inexpensive way to remove something like that (buff out? scratch finish?). I don't anticipate buying it but was just curious...

Looks like it's engraved pretty deep. You'd probably have to strip the silver plate to get rid of it, and even then it might be deep in under that. Everything is possible, but it might be easier to change your name.

Hmmm - presumably intended to be read while the horn was being played, which would mean the reader would be fairly close. Nothing like a weak trumpet player with a strong ego. . .

To remove that would mean taking off a significant amount of metal at a critical location in the bell geometry. Even assuming the removal of plating from the rest of the horn and then repeating were done well enough to not have effects, what would be required at the engraving would significantly impact the sound, and possibly feel, of the horn. The only "fix" is a new matching Bach bell.

A person could always just leave it, too. It is, for lack of a better term, part of the history of the instrument.

Wouldn’t it be possible to fill the engraving, smooth out the fill and plate over the repair?

At that point in the flare, the metal has been stretched to something around 0.02" thick. To not impact it functionally, you would need to find a fill material with the same physical properties as the worked and annealed yellow brass, apply it without thermally altering the surrounding brass, flush it up without taking away more than 0.001" of the surrounding brass, and do so on the very non-planer surface of the flare. I know of no viable fill material nor tooling that could do this (at any price)

Any good tech could fill, smooth and spot plate so it would be as if it never existed, the minimal amount of filler, working and heat required would have no effect on the bell.

Regards, Stuart.

Hi, Try to get the price down on the horn because of the engraving and why not find another bell and have a good tech install it? Or, make it a tunable bell horn and get a 43 and maybe 72 bell fitted by a good tech. There are many possibilities here if you can get the horn at a good price.

Just some thoughts.

It's part of the provenance of the horn. T'were it someone famous it would increase the value, but otherwise it decreases it. If it plays well I would try to negotiate a decrease in price. It if plays REALLY well, then who cares - buy it.

I have a Conn 38B that a previous owner etched their social security number on the side of the bell right below Elkhart, Indiana. Yes their SSN. It has become a conversation item at gigs so I have no intention of removing it! Someone's name is different, but if the horn plays great, why mess with it.

I've encountered several horns that were victims of "Operation Identification" in the 1970s. The program encouraged people to mark valuable items, and anything that a thief could easily pawn, with their drivers license or SSN (hard to imagine now). I remember the big displays at office supplies, K-Mart and other places selling those carbide-tipped electric engravers and promoting the program with big law-enforcement shields, etc.

That doesn’t seem to be an inexpensive way to fill an engraving.
