I own a mix of 8 horns, all but 2 were purchased with the plan to learn to repair and customize them. But I'm not much of a player these days. Back when I was, I felt comfortable with anywhere from 1-5 (Bb, C, picc, flugel, cornet) depending on what I was doing at the time and how my finances were.
I've been slowly transitioning into more of a minimalist lifestyle the past year or so, which means I'm working to downsize my current inventory. I'm not big on collecting or hoarding because it doesn't add value to my life. But it definitely does to other people.
The OP asked how many is too many. That's going to be depend on the individual. These days I can't really justify more than one. If you own 10, you play them all regularly and you can afford them then it's probably not too many. If you keep some for sentimental reasons and it doesn't stress you by occupying space or capital and they bring you joy then go for it. I think it's also think of them like a pet. Would they be better off with someone else who would get some use and joy out of them? Just some things to consider. |

Over the last 20 years I've bought and sold over 100 trumpets and until recently had as many as 10 at one time. Too many. Finally sold everything and always come back to my 98 Bach 37, 46 committe, 52 NY Bach 37m, Bach 72 LR |

I just added a used Getzen Eterna 700s to my stable. Plays well but will need a good cleaning and maybe a valve alignment. Very different sound and feel from my Bach, and not as much zing as my old Getzen 900 Severinsen, but a brighter sound than the Bach that might be useful for some situations. If nothing else, my office looks that much cooler with an additional horn on display! _________________ Bryan Fields

I just reduced my inventory with the sale of a Conn 28A to Derrick Gardner of the Basie Band and Jazz Prophets fame, and an Eclipse MY to Oscar Onoz of the Buena Vista Social Club Tribute Band.
Those horns are going to get a workout like I never gave them! _________________ Jim Hatfield

I started a horn safari about 15 years ago and I'm pretty happy with the horns I have currently. They meet my needs for different purposes. I was trying to find that one horn that would "do it all". I never found it. It may not exist. My current roster is in my signature, but I kept track of every horn I went through. Here they are in chronological order:
70's Bach Strad 37, Yamaha 6310Z, Olds Recording, Lawler C7, Callet Sima, Bach Strad 37, Yamaha 9335NY, '56 Martin Committee Deluxe, Wild Thing, Benge 3X, Schilke Handcraft, Getzen Severinsen, Bach 43, Edwards, Yamaha 6310Z, Schilke S32HD, Yamaha 8335LA, Yamaha 9335CHI, Bach 50th Anniversary, Bach 72, Bach 72 MLV, '53 Martin Committee Deluxe, Yamaha 8335, Yamaha 8335G, Bach Strad 37 (Dr. Valve refurb), '51 Committee Deluxe #3 Bore, Getzen 3051,Bach 25, '46 Olds Super Recording, Benge Pocket Trumpet, Yamaha 9335CHII. _________________ Del Quadro Grizzly

If the subject of this thread was "How many grand pianos do you own?" my answer would be, "One more than I used to own", and Jim Hatfield's answer would be, "One less than I used to own." Thanks again Jim! |

Is there really a limit to the number of horns you can own? I'd say I have over 9,000. All Bach 37's. Just couldn't find the right one until number 9000. |

I'm only back a year and a half and I'm definitely feeling some hoarding tendencies. In my "main home" (return next week) I have:
+ Carol 506 Bb
+ Carolbrass Pocket C
I am bringing back with me:
+ Fides Pro C
+ Olds Ambassador Cornet (c. 1949)
At my parents' house I've managed to stash:
+ A/Bb Liberty, c. 1924
+ Carolbrass mini pocket
+ Cleveland superior cornet
I also have one of those Tromba plastic cornets, a bugle, and a flugabone. The hard part is I've collected an odd enough assortment that I think they will be hard to sell. |
