I started doing both the Brisbois exercise and the timed panting recently. I can tell you that I have gotten better at the exercises rather quickly, but don't really know if they are helping my overall playing (I'm assuming yes).
I have questions for people who actually recommend these:
1) Taking a big breath and trying to expand my sides as much as possible I think causes me to overfill and create tension in the neck. What I've started doing is breathing in and then counting to ten out loud trying to keep a normal voice right from the start. I still feel a little tension in my neck just at the conclusion of the breath but it is better. Does this sound like a good way to do the exercise?
2) If I understand the timed panting correctly you are supposed to do 4-6 cycles (in and out) through your nose per second. I am currently doing 4 cycles per second and have built up to over 2 minutes. Do you think it is more important to build up the time or to shoot for 5 or 6 cycles per second?
Thanks for any help/feedback |
