One again I find myself turning to my friends on TH for advice. This time it's whether I should pass my Strad 72R on to my grandson who will be starting beginning band in the fall. Or should I shop around for a Bach or Yamaha student horn.

The 72R is an extra horn in my menagerie and I would really like him to have a nice horn but I worry that if he shows up with a pro horn, which the other kids are not likely to have, he might be perceived as a show-off.

What's your take?

If it were me I would find a good inexpensive horn for him and offer to gift him the strad after he develops some as a player.

I agree, also the 72LR is a pretty free blowing horn. Something with more resistance would probably be better. What else do you have in your menagerie?

I agree with LittleRusty, and I have respect for your desire to help your grandson.

I have a 10 y/o grandson who started trumpet in January on a school loaner. He quickly showed promise, so I bought a Yamaha 2335 which I found at a local music store. It was nearly new looking and I paid $300. This was better than ebay, of course, since I could inspect and play it.

I have a bunch of horns, but none that I would want a 10 y/o beginner to use.
In a couple of years, if he stays with it and is responsible, maybe I'll give him a Strad.

I doubt there would be horn jealousy in a beginning band. They don't know much about instruments, do they?

What a blessing that you are able to do this for your grandson! He will love whatever you give him!

Hold back the 72R and see how he progresses.

Good suggestions, guys! I just ran through the TH marketplace but didn't find any student ($300-500 range) horns. A bunch on eBay show promise....but you know the risks.

I think there's very little risk of any of the students perceiving your grandson as a show-off if he arrives with a pro horn. It's unlikely that any of the other students would have any idea or even care that your grandson is playing a pro horn. To beginning students it's all about what it looks like cosmetically.

When my daughter decided she wanted to play trumpet in fifth grade I let her use my Olds Recording. The case was beat up and the handle was missing and, as a result, she got teased by some of the other students. None of them realized she was playing a pro horn that was a collector's item.

So I really don't think that the brand/model by itself matters from a social perspective. In terms of whether the horn is appropriate for a beginner, my feeling is that it's a trumpet, it's not the Holy Grail, so why not if that's a convenient solution. It won't make any difference in your grandson's early development, he'll honk and blat like the rest of the kids at least early on. You already own it and have it available so why go out and buy something else? Just teach him to handle it with respect and care.

How old is he? I was selling a horn locally and the mom buying it was buying for a 4th grader. For that age, "shiny" matters a lot, and having whatever their neighbor has can be good too. If everyone else is playing rental Jupiters, that could be a good horn. On the other hand, if your trumpet looks great and he can play it, that's an option too. I'd feel better about giving a Bach to a 7th grader than a 4th grader...

What about your local Craigslist? I know student horns are all over the Craigslist here, many of them overpriced, but at least you can see and try them instead of sight unseen ebay.

It sounds strange but it actually matters if the Bach is silver plated or not. As for me and my house, I have an 11 year old daughter on a 1959 Olds Studio, which she says is less restrictive than the Yamaha student she was playing, and the 9 year old is happy on a 1955 Special. The elder girl is quite a strong blower and fills out that Studio nicely. We might get her a new horn this summer. Contemplating a road trip to KC MO.

I agree with the above contributors. Start him on a student horn. If he takes to it and likes it he will be ready for a better horn soon enough. Also, if he takes to the trumpet and practice, and all those things, then he will appreciate the 72 even more when you gift it to him. That is just MHO, sir. Good Luck to the young musician

Thanks again, everyone! I considered everything and ended up compromising on a $495 Conn S1 Severinsen I found in the TH Marketplace.

The Bach 72R with custom pipe will be a nice graduation gift for him!

Wait, there’s more...

I dithered over whether to get the lacquer one or the silver one so...

...I ended up buying them both so Ben can pick the one he likes best.

I’m sure I sound like an excessively involved grandparent but he’s the only grandson we have.

Sure seems like history is repeating itself, though. When his dad was in beginning band I bought him one of Buddy Childers’ used horns but soon the football bug bit. My son went on to help Army beat Navy four years in a row and his trumpet is now the only lamp in town that played lead for Stan Kenton.

A Getzen student horn new or used is a great start.

My trumpet-playing grandson's name is Ben, too!
Maybe we're related!?

Your family sounds like mine, nothing goes as planned, and we regularly defile the temple others hold in esteem, just for a laugh.

When my eldest son started playing the trumpet years back, my spare horn was a modified Bach 72/43 large bore and a 3C with a 26 throat.
He had zero issues filling it and sounded far better than the other trumpeters in band. Of course, he had me as his teacher meaning he was taught how to breathe and use air properly.
Had he not developed migraines from allergies and could not play with the pain, he would have been a good trumpet player.
Find one he likes.

The first Conn SS-1, the lacquer one, arrived yesterday and I have to say it is a terrific horn. Plays as well as my Strad and my Scodwell!

And I’m so impressed with Thompson Music in Omaha. The horn was in perfect mechanical condition and factory clean. And it was shipped free via FedEx!

Man, I wish I was in beginning band again!

When was your boy at The Point, Jim? I used to cover Army sports for the Poughkeepsie Journal back in the late 1980s.
