Hi,

I just bought a new Kanstul 1525 - and I'm looking for mouthpiece recommendations. I'm looking hard at the Bach 3CFL.

Currently I own a Yamaha 12F3d, Denis Wick 3FL and a Kanstul FB.

Thanks in advance!

I like the Warburton range in mine.

I've tried the Bach 3CFL. On my 1525, there were lots of intonation issues with it. Also, the tone wasn't very good.

I have used both a GR3FL and Kanstul M-B4FL. Both improved the sound and intonation dramatically over the Bach. The Kanstul, which is a copy of a Monette piece, is a bit tubbier. It also has a large throat which, if you're not careful, can sap your energy.

If there is a GR rim you like, I recommend one of their flugel mouthpieces.

John

The GR mouthpiece is probably a good one.
I use them as main mouthpiece on my trumpet and cornet.
But they are not cheap.
I use a Curry 1,5FL on my 1525. Couldn't justify the money for a GR because I really don't use my flugel a lot.

But before trying/buying a mouthpiece, you first need to know what kind of sound you are looking for. That might help you choosing the right mouthpiece before starting a mouthpiece safari (like so many of us tend to do )

p.s. If you are interested in a GR, you could call/mail them for more info, cause there are lots of mouthpieces to choose from. They usually respond quick (Brian Scriver is active on this forum too) and they have really good and friendly customer service!

A Yamaha 12F3d, is that a custom made one? (Yamaha don't produce the 12 rim in flügelhorn mp's nor other than standard bb's and rim shapes).

Once upon a time, they did: in 2003 I purchased an ex-demo 12F3D from Lewington's (UK) of which they said it wasn't current even at that time.
Quite a small piece, I gave it away to someone who liked it better than I did.

As much as the mouthpiece, I found that the right taper lead pipe matters. I use a French taper on my 1525. Tests with the strobe tuner show that most notes are closer to right than with the stock lead pipe. Nothing fixes the flat Ab on the staff.

I play a GR 66 FL. The 66 rim is close to a Bach 3C.

Not sure if one can get the French taper lead pipe now from Kanstul...
