A few days ago, i was driving home after a 2 hour band rehearsal and was stopped by a Police roadside breath test bus.

After the usual questions....have you taken any alcohol or drugs today etc i was instructed by the officer to blow in the tube until directed to stop, which he said normally takes 8-10 seconds. I took a normal breath and blew in the tube, after about 3 seconds, the cop is going stop stop. He said he had never seen anyone blow the unit to the testing point that quick and a lot of people need more than one try.

I said i was a trumpet player and had just had a rehearsal, he just shook his head and waved me on. There must be something in the CG breathing exercises (not that i am as diligent as i should be!)

Cheers

Back in my undergrad days I was working out regularly and doing the CG method, practicing around 3 hours per day. I encountered a couple of non-trumpeting friends one day who were messing with a hunting blowgun, shooting a feathered dart at a large cardboard box. The stronger one got it to stick halfway into the box from about thirty feet out. They were taking turns, stepping back a little more each time. I asked if I could try. From fifty feet away I drilled that dart all the way through the side of the box and into the other side.

They put it away after that.

When I was an avid scuba diver I'd go out on these dive boats with groups of people.

Most people would run out of air at 35 minutes at 60 ft. I'd be down there for 50 minutes and still had enough time for a safety stop at 15 ft. on the way up.

I was able to breathe more deeply and much more slowly and efficiently. I'd watch the other divers and notice them exhaling with twice the frequency I was (you could tell by their bubbles). They were just gulping that air in an out. And I wasn't expending any less energy, we were swimming against the same currents.

I attribute all of that to my trumpet playing.

I envy you breath-prowess people. I grew up in the water, and yet never could free dive for long. Just couldn't regulate the air for any significant length..

BTW, that blowgun story is funny. Wish I could've seen it.

It was over 35 years ago when I was young and strong and playing a huge bore horn with a huge mouthpiece. If I tried it now I'd probably pass out.

These are funny. But there is a downside.... I was always the person everyone passed the massive pool floats and other inflatables to prior to being able to plug them in to the wall

Funny. I also have a blow dart gun and have done something similar.
