I hope this isn't too ridiculous of a question.
What are the differences in sound between the Imperial and Indiana, if any?

You will need to be more specific as there are 3 distinct Imperial trumpet models from Martin. The first was the Handcraft Imperial made from the late 20s through the late 30s. It was their top of the line until the Committee, which strongly resembles it, came along. The second, made from the late thirties until it was adapted into the Martin Magna in 1964 was also a pro horn, but sort of a second tier one. Then, the name was applied to a student model horn in 1964 that ran until the early 70s - which essentially replaced the Indiana.

You can check out several videos of the Martin Indiana and the Imperial if you check out my YouTube channel (search the Brasscellar) or click on the link in my signature.

As mentioned there are several models of both horns.
If you want my advice try and find an Imperial with the dual reversed tuning slide.

Thanks for the replies:

The two Trumpets I am speaking of are not Handcraft models.
One is here... https://www.jlandressbrass.com/shop/Trumpets/Used-Trumpets/p/1960-Martin-Indiana-x40371764.htm

The other is here.... https://www.dillonmusic.com/used-martin-imperial-bb-trumpet.html

added bonus...Martin Dasant here... https://www.dillonmusic.com/martin-used-martin-dasant-bb-trumpet.html

Thanks

The second one (https://www.dillonmusic.com/used-martin-imperial-bb-trumpet.html) is the double-reverse tuning slide version of the Imperial that Zman is talking about.

Do you recommend that one over the Handcraft Imperial from the 30's?

As far as the OP: The 2nd generation Imperial is a professional horn. The Indiana is a student horn. Not so much apples & oranges as apples & apple-flavored beverage...

Both instruments are from just before the RMC period and well built. The 2nd generation Imperial is a departure from the period sound & feel of the original model which is very much a peer to the Handcraft Committee and Handcraft Standard. Jim D had some anecdotal indications that Schilke was involved in the Imperial re-design. It is a good solid middle of the road mid-century trumpet with great response and a relatively easy blow. The Magna version of it that followed in the Wurlitzer years looked very similar, but was much more of a paint-peeler.

Do you rekcommend that one over the Handcraft Imperial from the 30's?

Really depends what you are going for.
If you are after the Committee style sound then get the Imperial (I wouldn't get that one though.. 445 doesn't sound right to me. They are usually. 453).
Handcraft Imperials are great too, but are typically a little more money.

Committees are currently selling for great prices. I did a couple of vids talking about the prices recently. .

Zman,

Does the .445 bore on that imperial suggest it is a fake? If not, why wouldn't I get it?

Its not a fake. Just ask them to reconfirm the bore size.. 445 would be a small bore horn and typically not what most people would play.
Like anything if you can give it a play test first.
