Bach is making an intermediate, 2-piece bell horn for Canadian chain Long & McQuade, for less than $1600 USD:

Interesting description...

"The Bach VBS1S37LM2 is a unique semi-professional Bb trumpet designed exclusively for Long & McQuade. The trumpet is fully handmade in the US at the Bach factory and features a #37, 2 piece bell in brilliant silver plating. The rest of the trumpet is made in a very similar style to a Bach Stradivarius trumpet with a uniquely Canadian engraving pattern. This also comes with a new deluxe hybrid gig style case with backpack straps."

Assume this is being produced in the Eastlake Conn-Selmer factory? where the Bach TR series is produced.

Did some additional searching for the "Bach VBS1" trumpet, and they talk about "same valve assembly as Bach's premium Stradivarius series" Seems to be different versions one with a 37,43, and 72 bell. Here's a video...

Interesting. Correct me if I’m wrong but it seems to me that Bach is making a stencil horn for Long & McQuade. At least that’s what I’m thinking after hearing about this “uniquely Canadian engraving.”

I don't think it qualifies as a Stencil, because it is still branded Bach. It's just a model exclusive to L and M.

It’s not the first time they’ve done this. They made one a few years back to celebrate the store’s 60th anniversary. One of my students has one. Definitely not the greatest horn for sure.

Hello Richard. Do you think much of the fully-fledged Stradivarius? Just trying to gauge your answer. Thanks.

I haven’t played a strad in a long time, except for testing students horns, but I definitely think the strad, if you find a really good one, would beat this lower tier trumpet by a good margin.

That might be down to the individual horn. Our local L&M has one of these “special editions” in and I play tested it, albeit only for a short time.

I honestly didn’t find enough of a difference between that and my Strad to say “I’m glad I spent the extra money on a ‘real’ Strad”. My main criteria, though, is “can I produce the sound I want from a horn without too much extra work?” I’m not a purist, and some on this forum probably have a much more developed sense of timbre and tone than I do, so it might not be for everyone.

Nevertheless, I’d say it’s a great trade up horn, and I don’t think anyone would have to be embarrassed taking one out in a semi pro setting. Maybe even pro. After all, if I made my living from my trumpet, I’d have whatever trumpet I played tweaked and finessed to the extreme of its playability by a tech, and I didn’t get the sense that you’d have to do too much extra to the VBS compared to the Strad.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but hasn't the VBS 2-piece bell Bach "Strads" been out for many years in the European market ??

Wasn't Thomann a dealer of them as far back as 10 yrs ago ??

Absolutely correct. I expect it's the same trumpet, rolling off the same production line, but Bach has partnered with L&M for the Canadian market.

I'm not sure Thomann had an exclusive deal. I think other European sellers had the VBS, too, and also I believe they were available in the Far East (though I might be wrong about that)

I would be very surprised if this VBS line is made here in the USA and not overseas by contract. That price point would still be too low for a slim downed, budget Strad. Anyone can confirm where it's manufactured at ???

The wording in the advertisement is: "The trumpet is fully handmade in the US at the Bach factory"

Here is a comparison of the above-mentioned VBS and a TR-450, made in Germany. It had me at two-piece valve casings:

Well, the Bach Co of today is not the Bach Co of 1975 and prior. But, what is your main point here?
