What do you do with these licks?

You might have seen my Lick of the Day series I had posted here on TH, on my YouTube and Instagram channel. The series went for an entire year, but many were asking for more and if I could go more in-depth on what to do with them.

So...

I've started a new video series on my channel called What to Do With These Licks!

This week I'm taking two licks (one from June 20th and the other from June 22nd) and diving into what I do with 'licks' and playing some examples over a standard or progression of the week. This week it's Days of Wine and Roses:

This week's video is taking two licks (from June 2018) and how I might apply them over All the Things You Are.

This week's video uses two licks (from early July 2018) and how I might apply those over the 4 bars in All the Things You Are that are non-diatonic:

I hope you enjoy it and that it adds some value/benefit for you this week!

East of the Sun is the next standard/progression up for this week's What To Do With These Licks. I'm taking 2 licks (from July 2018) and showing what I might do with them over this tune:

This week: a brisk walk on Miles Davis' Four. I'm using two licks. One that starts with fourths and at a tempo of 2four0. Enjoy!

This past weekend I was playing a gig where our trombone player called Benny Golson's Whisper Not and it inspired me to use this tune for this week's What To Do With These Licks.

In Denver, the air is pretty crisp this morning. It must mean Fall is around the corner. So, I'm using Autumn Leaves as the tune for this week's What To Do With These Licks (also inspired by this week's Jam of the Week).

This week's video is using the Jazz standard - There Will Never Be Another You. I'll be taking two licks from August 28th & September 1st of 2018 and showing what I might do with them over the progression and how to work them naturally into my own playing.

Enjoy!

It's October 10th and it's snowing in Denver. So, this week's video is taking two licks and showing what I might do over the Art Blakey & the Jazz Messenger's version of Come Rain or Come Shine...just not snow
