I think I would have died of jealousy if I had heard another 11-year-old play that well when I was 11 years old.

Does she study with Linda Briceño? If not, she's been paying careful attention.

Linda Briceño resides in NYC. According to the description on YouTube, Nicole (don't know her last name) currently lives in Santiago de los Caballeros in the Dominican Republic with her parents. I doubt young Nicole is studying with Ms. Briceño, but perhaps Nicole began her music studies through the El Sistema de Orquestas program like Briceño did.

I had just started at 11, I sense she's been playing for a bit. I doubt she developed that level of skill in a year or less.

I was lucky enough to start at 10 years old. Looking back, I now see that I was never very good. I just loved it, and for a while I was slightly better than my peers who started at 12 or 13. My guess, Nicole either precociously discovered an effective way to model what she heard, or she is talented & motivated & fortunate enough to receive instruction as soon as she could hold a trumpet. What I found most noticeable about her playing was her tone. Very smooth with a subtle vibrato. IMO, her tone was more impressive than how well she got around the horn. I agree that those qualities do not come together in just one year.

I went to the Dominican Republic to meet with Niccole and her family. I wanted to get a quality horn in her hand. She looked over the horns I produce and picked out a monster of a horn. I thought she would never be able to hold it or fill it up. I was wrong on both accounts. I have a facebook video that has over 6,689,496 People Reached and 2,722,846 3-Second Video Views. Cole Playing Rafael Solano: "Por amor" https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=1268204796674886

Here I will post the YouTube version.

Niccole is a refugee of Venezuela now living in the Dominican Republic. The family left Venezuela because of the difficult economic, social and political situation. They came to the Dominican Republic because they would let them in with the few documents they had and the Latin music and Jazz music is big in the DR. The father, Dalyomar Meza and Daughter, Niccole Meza Ramos are musicians, the father studied music in Mexico and created a Mariachi music school. The daughter little 11 year old Niccole is also a very tallented singer she represent Venezuela at the International Jazz Festival in Oslo, Norway. Niccole now plays DR jazz with a band called Sistema Temperado, and also plays in their Mariachi band and is a vocalist.

She does not read music. She plays by ear. She is now taking lessons to read music. Lets hope this does not mess up her talent! LOL

Cole started on Trumpet at 8 years old!

She is playing a MC6 Crow Custom Brass Trumpet now renamed the "MC6 Cole Trumpet".

@ kehaulani

I contacted her parents and worked out a sponsorship agreement with them. Then I traveled down and had a signing and presented her with her new "MC6 Cole Trumpet" by Crow Custom Brass.

After this video she changed over to a Gold 5C mouthpiece that I brought down just for her to test out. Niccole loved it. I did not think I was going to give it to her this but she is so adorable she got the mouthpiece as well. Once you get to know her this one can get just about anything she wants!

I may be going down later as her father wants to start selling the Crow Custom Brass Trumpets in his Mariachi School.

It was a hoot hanging out with her and seeing her talent. On a side note being a trumpet player. I told her that she may be better than I am but I will Always be taller than her!

In hindsight if I had a professional Jazz pianist playing with me when I just played around I would sound as good as she does! Right?

It was a very productive trip and I made some really good friendships!

I trying to get visa for the family to tour in the United States but the government of Venezuela is broken and getting any official documentation out of Venezuela is impossible. I have sent an email to the Lincoln Center to see if they can help. If anyone here knows someone that knows someone please let me know.

Keep us informed, O.K.? Maybe there's something we can do to help, as well.

She is developing the instinctive ability to play the notes she intends to play without any necessity of knowing how to read music, without studying or knowing theory, etc.

She's learning to play as though it's a language, no different in principle than speaking. This is what the great jazz players did and still do.

The names of the notes don't matter. What matters are the pitches, relative pitches, articulations and rhythms and the muscular and mechanical things necessary to produce them.

It's difficult to explain but when you see it happening in these videos it's a lot easier to understand.
