My city has asked me to provide some music for a 9/11 ceremony. While there is no avoiding the tragedy of that day, my hometown is attempting to focus on the positive actions of the first responders on that day.

So I have a brass quintet ready to play but I'm looking for ideas on other pieces to play as prelude for the outdoor ceremony. It's isn't quite a patriotic celebration, but I think some patriotic music might be appropriate.

They have requested taps and I'm thinking this arrangement of "The Call Has Come" would be appropriate.

Otherwise what might you suggest? What might I avoid? Any input is welcome.

Here are a few that I've used in the past:

Amazing Grace (Holcombe)
Armed Forces Salute (Villanueva)
Going Home (Canadian Brass)
Salute to Cohan (Kendor) -- selections
Sousa Collection (Canadian Brass)

"Ever Braver, Ever Stronger (An American Elegy)" by Gordon Goodwin is beautiful, but written for concert band.
I don't know if it is available for brass quintet.

I played Fanfare for the Common Man with the NYPhil brass at the opening of the 9/11 memorial and it was well received. Also Meecham Song of Hope is up lifting.....as well as Fackeln im Sturm.

"The Vacant Chair" by George F Root is available as a brass band arrangement - which would scale to quintet.

Ken Force's "Eternal Father - Taps" is the best piece I know of, but its for full band w bugle soloist (Wish I could post Jari Villanueva and the Maryland Defense Forces Band at Arlington in 2012...incredibly moving). You might contact Jari and see if he ever tried adapting that for quintet. His site is a good resource for other ideas: https://www.jvmusic.net/store/

Thanks for the feedback everybody. Jari has a quintet piece called "The Call Has Come" that is quite nice, but one of our quintet members has a piece of the same name by Holcombe/Jr.

I'll look through these and see what else I can find.

Ewazen wrote a pretty tune Called Hymn for Lost and Living for trumpet and piano in tribute to 9/11.
