I've resorted to playing some of the arban studies up a 4th to make sure I'm regularly going 'up there'. I'm a little concerned that I may end up forgetting how to read properly tbh!

But onto my main point - what studies do you work on to solidify the register up to and above high C?

Pops new/expanded Arban's might be helpful. See the page below:

Try the Kreutzer "Forty-Two Studies or Caprices" for violin; it's inexpensive and many of them are accessible on trumpet...

for starters - scales (maj, min, aug, in 3rds, 4ths, 5ths...Clarke #2 pattern but keep going up/and down), Clarke, Arban, Concone in all keys, throughout your available registers - and the best thing is you don't have to buy another book(s)

Great advice - lots to work on here to improve your trumpet playing in general, not just pushing up your comfortable range.

Great advice chaps. I'm playing through #10 and I think #8 (in B flat starting key) I'm absolutely loving them, so meaty!

I'll have to hunt my concone. The really satisfying this about taking these studies up a 4th is that you're not working on 'range' on it's own, but good fundamentals!

If you don't want to think too hard you could play them as written on an Eb trumpet.

I'm digging the transposition to be honest! It's real head-masher to transpose them, and play them on the e flat as written.

Both Kreutzer and Arban up a fourth were given to me by Bob McCoy. Great stuff

Firstly, I would stop referring to that note as "high" C - in the mind of many people, giving it the title of "high" makes people think that it is the top of the range and/or difficult. Try to think of it is "just another C" - there are others afterwards.

As for specific exercises:
Scales and scale exercises - just keep going until you can't go further. Repeat daily and you will find that your range will gradually increase. It won't necessarily happen within days, but if you give it time, it will expand. Eventually all scales become two octaves, then three...

Simple tunes - transpose them up a semitone until you reach your limit - repeat as above.

Any exercise you find "easy" - put it up an octave BUT try to make it sound just as easy.

In all of these examples, the aim is to keep your sound as good as possible. When it starts to sound "less desirable" that is a good sign that you should take a step back (maybe go back a semitone or two) and ascend again.

I often use clarinet or flute studies and exercises with my students who want to explore their upper register - because of the range of these instruments you get much more (in my opinion) "musical" literature to work with, that has been written for that range - rather than many (not all) trumpet books having their exercises extended or taken up an octave.

I'll start checking out violin and flue studies too. Yep, I'm accepting a scrappy sound to begin with, then refining it over time. It's all going quite well to be honest.
