I've noticed that the Holton model 25 cornet (1939) looks almost identical to the Olds super cornet of the same era. I'm wondering if anyone has played the Holton and how it compares to the Olds Super.

The double front loop architecture spanned quite a few models from Holton, King, Martin and Olds. This was the topic of a chart I made up a few years ago while discussing the idea of "instrumental inheritance" with Niles Eldredge, who has been working on a theory of material cultural evolution for a number of years now (As if he and Gould being the only folks to ever "correct" Charles Darwin wasn't enough for one lifetime). Here is a link to that chart:

http://www.trumpet-history.com/Double%20Front%20Loop%20Chart.pdf

The Holton 25 is a very nice cornet. Compact, full tone. Good response and it "feels right" in the hands. Holton made two Model 27 Stratodynes, the shorter-lived of which was based on the Model 25 (the other being based on the longer Model 29). The Stratodynbe version has the fast responding and very colorful lightweight high copper bell and is a real treat to play.

The Super is a little more traditional American Long Cornet in sound and feel than the Holton 25. In that regard, I would say the Super is a more modern cornet, the 25 a more traditional.

Wow thanks, Your the guy! I'm looking at one at the moment, asking price just under $200. looks to be in very good condition. They say that for the age, the compression is good. I'm thinking this would be better then any modern student line horn. All my work is on trumpet, looking at getting a cornet for something different......Thanks

Looking at your signature block, you may also want to consider an unabashed American long cornet, the 29-based Holton Model 27 Stratodyne. There is one on EBay right now misidentified as a Holton trumpet. It's a little pricier, but for what it is, a small amount to pay.

I saw that one. looks like it would need some dent work on the bell (and what ever else). That of course would be fine, but With what the "buy it now" price tag i, it would be a little to much for me at the moment. But that sure is a fine cornet!

Oops. I hadn't looked at the pictures. You are right about the bell. It's a pass.

I've heard the early 60's Holton Galaxy cornet is also a fine player. Any thoughts between that and the model 25 cornet?

I play an early 60s Holton Galaxy. I do not have the brass-winds insight of some others on TH, but I have played several different cornets; my feeling is that the Galaxy is a good one!

Hey thanks for the reply! I'm looking at those two horns that are for sale with the same asking price. So trying to decide which way to go.

Hi all,

Looks like I'm going to get the 1961 Holton Galaxy cornet. Wondering about which mouthpiece receiver it has. Would it be the older traditional receiver or the modern one that takes any newer mouthpiece shank.

Holtons of that period use a modern mouthpiece

I wonder if I may have picked up the Model 25 that was referred to as being under $200. It was on Ebuy and offered by Dillon's Music. It was listed as USED HOLTON Bb CORNET because there is no number on the bell. I think in a year or two they started putting the model number on but this is from 1939. Anyway, it's a nice player in great condition so its stand next to the couch is in first position presently.

Yes, that is a 1939 model 25, which was the first year for the model 25, that wrap having been used for the model 24 Resotone model in 37&38. In the 1930s, the model number commonly was stamped on the underside of the receiver reinforcing ring where the mouthpiece goes in. I don't know if they did that on the early 25s though - they did on the Resotone.

Just checked the bottom of the receiver on the Holton and you are correct, OldSchoolEuph, the number 25 is there. Man, it's small though. Thanks for the tip. Much appreciated. It's a smooth and mellow blow.
