And how are you solving it?

I was going to say upper register, but that’s the same as in the past, just attention and patience etc.

For me it’s articulation, mainly starting a note in time. It has helped to breathe thru my nose to simplify getting the embouchure configured to release the note cleanly, like practicing free throws closer to the basket. (I do a variant of Caruso 6 notes, so I’m used to nose breaths.)

Mpiece buzzing helps, but really soft.

What is or was your main struggle coming back?

Lip endurance. Like most of us here. I address it with regular practice and rest in between. If anyone knows a better way, I'm all ears.

Fast runs. Haven’t solved it yet, and probably never will.

Doing the same here, and focusing on rest within a session. I’ve been using a timer app to time the rest between phrases and exercises. Helps me start and end fresh instead of tired.

Just watched a masterclass on YouTube with Scott Belck, and he does a similar thing, with the goal of being “chop-neutral” after a session. Check him out. Good stuff.

Audiation, particularly for baroque trumpet. Looking at a note on the page and audiating it. The problem is forming the habit of thinking (audiating) the precise pitch I want to play for each note. With the modern horn, I never really had to think about it too much (almost subconscious), pitches just seem to be accurate. The audiation comes naturally with the music. (All the equal temperament experience from childhood?) Singing, precision exercises, etc. are ways I am attacking this, but I would love to hear what others do to improve audiation and to make it more a more accurate, conscious habit, make looking at the notes on the page an audiation experience.

Myself

Have to remind myself that I am a comeback player doing this as a hobby and not let myself gut frustrated at poor playing on a day or lack of overall progress. At rimes I regress back to the competitive high school player expecting to make quick strides although I am a middle aged comeback player.

In some ways my playing is better now, in others not. Gotta live with that

But not in that order.

Actually, mine at the present seem to be finger speed and coordination.

Motivation.

Been doing this for 50+ years, can handle about everything I'm expected to perform without any real work or serious effort. Even in the college studio, my school is not noted for performing musicians, more for leftist activism... Oh, I've got to stay in shape but new material is not really a deal.

Something that would really kick my butt and that I wanted to do would actually be a good thing, but at my age everyone around me seems to be in their own established genre. WTH? I'm just more than fortunate to be performing regularly at my age, and as an Ed major with no performance emphasis what-so-ever to boot. Luck, or the grace of God? You'll have to be the judge, TH won't let me (or they'll kick me off again).

Bet I'm not the only one around here who could use some real motivation if people are honest... Best wishes!

Tonguing in the upper register without adding pressure. I can slur pretty easy and with good tone from pedal range and up to high f with little pressure. Adding tongue changes everything and pressure starts to be a problem. I added a routine with doubletonguing scale from c in the staff to d-e above staff a week ago and yesterday it all fell apart. I could feel how I had started using more pressure in my overall playing, tone and endurance was worse than normal and I had started to develop a doublebuzz. I could also see marks form the mouthpiece on the lips after playing. Soft playing with as little as possible pressure and slurring up and down between high and low range this morning made things a lot better. So what I struggle with is learning how to play with crisp, fast tonguing above high c without destroying everything else.

Struggle with:
1)Playing trumpet period
2)Endurance
3)Range
4)Tone
5)Arthritis vs finger dexterity

Dealing with it (won't say "solving"):
1)Practice (hey, I'm a euphonium player...)
2)Practice
3)Practice
4)Equipment safari … and more practice!
5)Wish I was . . . .

My biggest struggle is finger speed and coordination as well. My finger speed has been affected by arthritis caused by overuse from 35 years of 4 to 5 hours of daily typing on a computer (like I’m doing now!). Finger exercises help and on bad days I use an anti-inflammatory like ibuprofen, which helps as well.

I include finger work in my daily routine. I mix it up, but I frequently use Claude Gordon’s Velocity Studies.

I’ve had slow improvement, but I don’t think I’ll be playing Flight of the Bumble Bee at 144 BPM any time soon!

I have PLENTY of playing issues but the biggest problem at present is just playing too much. I KNOW I'm overdoing it but always try to keep going 'just a little longer'... and seem to keep running past the finish line!!

I still struggle with a strange anxiety/jittery feeling. Despite being comfortable with the music itself, when I am in a new setting I tend to shut down on the basics and suffer from bad playing habits. Once I settle in it's fine, but it's an odd sensation of not being able to control it when it happens.

Very frustrating, and sometimes embarrassing as it translates to a shaky tone.

1. Finding practice time.

2. Amateur ensemble pointless personality politics.

I can relate to that. I mentioned the “chop neutral” thing earlier, and that is a daily goal for me. I may extend a 25 min session for another 5 min for warm down, but that’s about it.

I mentioned articulation trouble in the first post, and that’s getting better just from playing thru easy etudes. Range is still weak, but the useable notes are improving. Most of the problems I have currently are really just standard for beginners, which is good to know. Still having fun.
