https://www.horn-u-copia.net/serial/Bessonlist.html

Presumably the op means the Besson 1000 series which is the student line (IIRC made in India?), I would guess that serial numbers are rather different.

If it’s a BE1000, it’s either really good or not. If it says Made in USA, it was made by Kanstul; really good horn. If not, India. Walk away.

Just my 2 cents

Dave

I have one - supposedly a student horn, blows very nice - as far as sound and blow I'd say it's comparable to my Severinsen Eterna. I'd have no problem playing one on a gig. It's probably the definitive answer to "what's a good horn for marching". Plays really well, you won't have a lot invested in one if it gets ding'd and you can readily play it in concert band as well.

I became familiar with the model when I found one in a local Sam Ash in their used horns area. I had never played any Besson before. I was really surprised. But they wanted more than I was ready to part with for a horn I didn't need so I kept my eye out for one on ebay. Found one in next to new condition for a bargain price - got it for under $150, in silver plate no less.

The only thing I'd say is there might be some inconsistency in manufacture - the first one at the Sam Ash had buttery smooth, fast valves. My ebay find had a bit of an issue with one valve, which I've mostly fixed with repeated toothpaste lapping - removing the spring, guide and cap, reinstalled the stem, coating the valve with toothpaste, inserting the valve in reverse direction in the casing - i.e. from the bottom - then running it up and down and around repeatedly. Takes off a microscopic amount of metal each time from the valve and casing. If possible I would definitely recommend testing this aspect before buying.

They show up on ebay all the time. I wouldn't pay more than $200 - $250 for one.

A short sample of some notes played on mine, I was experimenting with a Bobby Shew Lead mp - which is why I was at the Sam Ash that day, to look at mouthpieces and got the Shew.

Thanks to all you responded. I'm a comeback player.
I traded a Bach TR300 my grandson played for 3 years from a young girl just starting.
My instructor played in Navy bands and then band director for over 30 years says this is a quality horn. It is well made, large bore (.460) and quick valves. I've been playing the Besson building my endurance and then go to my Bach 43 for the remainder of my lesson/rehearsal. I like the sound and feel so I'll just play and enjoy it. fyi, I play a Paul Stephens Lead mouthpiece.
I have 7 horns now; 5 are being played by students in middle/high school who are taking lessons from my instructor. And, I'm sponsoring several students.
Thanks again...I appreciate your time in helping me.

love this forum!

You might do a fresh post in the pedgagy section about the sponsoring, horn lending you're doing. A lot of us would find that interesting.

Is a BE1000 different than a Besson 1000?

I see some differences between mine and the photo on the WWBW site - mine doesn't have the staggered tuning slide, the valve buttons are different - mine are silver plated, the WWBW pic shows mother of pearl inlays, the bell logo is a little different. I don't know if they're fundamentally different instruments or just changes made to the construction over time.

Look on the back side of the valve casing for additional markings
