Hi all,

Recently I've been playing a nice '41 Conn 22B I had fixed up in NYC. I use the mouthpiece setup I use on my more modern Bach 37. Although, I've noticed that the mouthpiece that came with the horn works a little better (a Vega 'Special'). Not in love with it however.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a period mouthpiece to match with this vintage horn? Maybe something that would translate well to my current 1 1/2 C Bach (or ballpark) mouthpiece. I've read that Robert Nagel played a Bach 1C, but not sure if this was with a 22B or the 60B that he played in his later career.

Thanks for the help.

Mine came with a Conn 4.

You might like a TA1 from Austin Custom Brass. Trent says it’s based on a classic design with a V-shaped cup and an inside diameter between a Bach 7 and 5. I use one for big band and it provides a full sound in the staff with easier access to the upper register.

I didn’t think I would like it because I was used to pieces in the 1.5 category but I’ve found the smaller size beneficial.

I’ve played a few of those older Conns and I’ve found that they work much better with smaller mouthpieces (e.g. I use a 7D for big band/commercial playing vs. a 1.25C-size piece for everything else).

I like a little more open feeling mouthpiece with my Conn 12B vs a medium large bore trumpet.

They also respond better to a large gap as shown here :

I own two 36b Connstellations.

Mouthpieces that work well with these trumpets (at least to me) include:

A Najoom 3c/3 top with ACB A1 slug backbore (what I am currently using). Good for all-around use.

A '60's Connstellation 5BN. Don't care for the size, but it fits well and is period correct. I have a couple of beat-up Conn 4's and an EZ-Tone from the same time period, if you are sticking with a matching piece. They all play quite acceptably, and "look" period-correct.

70's Bach 1

Bach MV 7c

Purviance 4*7 for big band lead playing.

Purviance 4*D4W for studio work. Good recorded sound with the Connstellations.

All of these fit the receivers acceptably, and play well. I have found that gap doesn't affect these horns nearly as much as other trumpets I use.

The Conns are my go-to instruments unless, of course, the "Bach Sound" (whatever that is) is required.

Just wanted to thank everyone for the great suggestions. I tried a 1970's Bach 1, a Conn 4, and a converted a Bach 1 1/4 C that takes Reeves sleeves. The gap problem got worked out and it sings!

If you liked the performance of the mpc cut for sleeves, what size sleeve did you find worked best? I know from experience that the standard Reeves shank, a #4, produces a larger gap than any mpc I own. So I will try a couple of Reeves and Purviance mpcs in my old Conns. But I wonder if a sleeve of 3.5 or even 3 might work better.

I started with a 4 and moved to a 3.5. Both sounded good, but the 3.5 was a little more comfortable. If I had continued to experiment, I probably would have gone even smaller. Hope this helps!

Thanks. If I get my hands on some sleeves bigger than a 4, like a 3 or 3.5, I will have to give them a try. I always thought the old Conns wanted a mpc that inserted further because the old BI mpcs are longer than today's standard trumpet mpc.

Beveling the exit wall of the mouthpiece is something that works on the 22b

The time I played Conn 22B I used a Warburton 5M cup + 6 backbore
