I need to know:

Is it true that Bud Herseth did one-arm pushups between Mahler recording sessions??

Please advise.

No, that's just a humorous story. The story that is true, and just amazes me, is that when he was in top shape he could play the entire Top Tones book in one sitting with thirty seconds of rest between each etude. This impresses me more than one armed push-ups!

Wow! Just compare the number of people who can do one arm push ups vs the afore top tones feat, and i think statistics will prove you right lol.

I also heard Bill Adam used to play through the entire charlier book without taking the mouthpiece from his lips to test his endurance, but i can't verify.

Bud was a stud!, RIP

I've also heard this many times although I never confirmed it with Mr. Adam. Either way, those two men were giants.

Herseth had great range as well. According to a former colleague of mine who studied with him, Herseth could play a double C.

I once heard that Herseth could do 405lb deadlifts holding the bar with one hand while simultaneously playing Brandenburg 2 on a large bore Bb in the other hand. That's just what I heard.

In the version I heard, he was playing a Wild Thing.

So do I. At least we have something in common.

I don't know about Bud, but I personally witnessed Doc Severinsen do 20 push ups (albeit regular ones...), grab his horn and head on stage for a show. This was about a dozen years ago, so he would've been 80.

Sorry guys, you're both wrong, it was a Mount Vernon Bach bass trumpet.
