Just a shout out for Paul Baron's recent book, Trumpet Voluntarily, which is now available, either as a PDF or in print from qPress (I have no affiliation with either the publisher or Paul). Well presented and thoughtful, it's more text than specific exercises, but everything is in easy, clear and insightful prose. As a longtime professional, I learned (or re-learned) many important tips. I especially like his ideas about developing range above high G (above high C) which, until recently, has always been a sort of upper ceiling for me. Rather than the usual lip slurs or arpeggios, Paul's idea is to approach these highest notes from smaller intervals (Maj and min 3rds) and melodic exercises, ala HL. Clarke, but alternating high and low sequences. Developing familiarity with these notes, interspersing high melodies with low, and letting the ear guide you, and are key. I also love the practical advice about mouthpiece selection, warming up on gig days and non-gig days. Paul's approach is never didactic, just gentle advice from someone who has walked the walk for several years, mostly in Broadway and pit orchestras. Well worth a read. |

I completely agree. The book is comprehensive, and has been getting some pretty amazing reviews.

Holy cow, Paul Baron just followed on his book series again.
The Broadway Trumpeter is an insane, 349-page grand method teaching commercial players from behind the lead book on Broadway. So cool. _________________ Check out qPress for the largest selection of trumpet books on the internet. |
