I would like to know if the vintage King Symphony Super 20 Dual Bore trumpet was ever made with a yellow brass bell, instead of the "usual" silver bell?

The model 1049 has a brass bell, the 1049S has sterling silver bell.
Info is from a King advertising poster at
www.hnwhite.com
I don't know if the model number is stamped anywhere on the instrument, I can't find it on my 1048. The 2nd valve casing is likely marked DB on the 1049 models.

PLAY the next note 'on time' and 'in rhythm'.
Oh ya, watch the conductor - they set what is 'on time'. |

Thanks Jay, would you say that the grass bell versions are rarer than the silver?
I had a chance to buy one a few weeks ago for $799 and passed it up. _________________ 1934 Bach NY Strad, 1955 Mt. Vernon Strad, 1972 Elkhart Strad, Larson GFT

I don't have any info or ideas about how many of the different versions were made, or whether one is more 'popular' than the other.

I just cleaned up a King 600 from the mid 70s and found the serial numbers under the pads on the valve pistons. You might check there. _________________ Bill |

Jay, there was also a Super Sonic S1 which was a medium bore. I had one for awhile and am very sorry I let it go. Entirely different horn from the dual bore but both hit heavy for their cost.

DonĀ“t know if my Super 20 Symphony dual bore is a vintage one or yellow brass bell is the same as gold lacquered. Serial number locates it to the year I bought it, 1970. Anyway it is in gold lacquer, bell and all. No, not all, leadpipe silver! _________________ Cornets: mp 143D3/ DW Ultra 1,5 C

The King Super-20 Symphony model was released in 1946 with the "dual bore" "DB" marking on second valve, a 1-piece brass bell and the model number 1049. The Symphony Silversonic with Sterling bell was designated model 1049S. Several years into production the bell changed to a 2-piece design, but the 1049 remained the "stock" model. 1049S Silversonics were at a premium price. In 1965 with the introduction of the Silver Flair, a dual bore prototype for the Flair line was created by HN White, but the company was sold before it could go into production. Nate Dolin opted to continue the Super-20 Symphony instead. _________________ Ron Berndt

Yes, brass was the regular bell, and you could order the Symphony DB with either a sterling silver bell, sterling silver lead pipe, or both. _________________ King Super 20 Trumpet; Sov 921 Cornet
