I'm almost sure now that Lee Morgan was playing a Benge in the late 50s and NOT a Besson.

In the videos on Youtube and in photos on Google, you can see the main tuning slide brace very clearly and it is "double banded" or "double ringed" like a Benge would be and the position of the 3rd slide stop rod is exactly where one would be on a Benge. He was most likely playing either a Chicago Benge or Burbank Benge at the time.

Lee could have played a tin can and still sounded like Lee

I'd happily pay $50 AND the shipping on that tin can 😳

The picture here looks like a Strad. Lee played a bunch of different horns.

That looks like a late NY Bach Strad to me..

What a nice thread this is, BTW!!

How about in the video above - can anyone ID his mouthpiece and/or horn in that one?

I believe this is the earliest video footage of Lee playing live, on tour w/ Art Blakey in 1958 in Belgium, & within a year of his recording Blue Trane (which was on Dizzy's upturned bell Committee). I love all of his playing so much, from his best to his worst, and from his earliest to his latest - but this video is probably the closest to his playing on Blue Trane, which to me was the pinnacle of his technique, before his various health problems, etc., brought him on a series of ups and downs, even though his harmonic sensibilities continued to advance throughout his career....

.....there is also a VERY short clip of him from a circa 1970 TV special of him at the Jazzmobile in Harlem teaching jazz to some young adult trumpeters, and playing at minor key lick for them real slow around the circle of 5ths - he did not forget the fundamentals !

I believe he was playing a Chicago Benge trumpet as stated in my earlier post on this 1958 Belgium performance. The double ringed design on the tuning slide bracing and the placement of the 3rd slide stop rod (right in the middle) makes me 80 percent sure that it is an early Benge and not a Besson. I have also seen other photos on google with Lee Morgan holding the horn in the late 50s era and they all show the features of a Benge.

From one Lee nut to another - ask & ye shall receive - & thanks for the link to the great composer AND trumpeter Steve Lampert for sharing it with me - Noah Preminger just released an LP of Steve's music this year (2019) that has been critically acclaimed in the jazz and general music press - Steve started out as a trumpet player tho (including a stint in the Buddy Rich big band), and is also a Lee freak, and saw Lee many many times at Slug's in Manhattan in the late 1960s, where he told me he would sit right in front of the stage and bring Lee's favorite cigarettes and leave them on his table so Lee would bum them from him and strike up a conversation (!!!!!!!!)...Steve also teaches jazz history now at the college level in Manhattan....enjoy the Lee pattern !

Thanks deejay, just a tiny snippet, but a real rarity and shows Lee was also an educator.

I think that had he lived past an insanely young age of 33, he may well have eclipsed all those now hailed as the 'Giants'

There hasn't been all that much in the way of true innovation with any real merit since he left us and all the offerings by his contemporaries were not in the same league and they all waned into blandness ultimately.

Lucky he was such a prolific composer and recording artist, we have so little left of the man himself.
