Hi Folks,

I studies with Doc back in the 70s. As all might know, he had a routine named after the Subject above. If you got through it mistake free, he took you out for a steak dinner. He was a hilarious genius. I did acquire that dinner, but have lost the exercise over time.

Does anyone by any chance have a copy and would be willing to send it along. I'll pay if so desired.

Thanks much,

Jim

The Steak Routine is #6 in the Brandt 34 Orchestral Etudes book, đť…  = 60, all with a "pom" attack.

If you could do it without chipping a single note, he said he would buy you the biggest steak in Philadelphia.

In 1978 or maybe 1979 when he assigned me that, he told me he had never had to buy a single steak.

It's a great routine, for sure, and I have had that etude memorized for decades now.

For the benefit for a non-Reinhardt but a curious student, what is a "pom" attack?

It's a very "legit" attack. Not too pointed, not too legato, just a nice, full orchestral style of attack. Big and grandiose . . . grab your thesaurus and chime in.

Fortunately it did not need to be exorcised.

Is a pom attack like the solo in Pictures at an Exhibition?

That's crazy! I never took lessons with Reinhardt and knew nothing about the "streak" challenge, but for some reason I've made it a thing over the years to try and play exercise #6 in the Brandt 34 Orchestral Etudes book with NO mistakes to measure my skills. I'm an accomplished player and I have tried this on my best day when my chops are great. I have never played it perfectly. It's freaky. It's not really that hard, at least it doesn't look that hard. I will think I can definitely do this but somewhere someplace in it I will not hit at least one note not perfectly.

My eyes aren't the greatest. I initially read this as "porn" attack.

Could someone attach this exercise for our download to study? Thanks.

what tempo? A poster above said "X=60" but I am unable to see the character they used on my computer.

Is it like a poo attack? or just a round clear tongued attack?

Eighth note = 60 . . . in other words, very slow and precise.

Doc said "pom" attacks . . . now, sometimes my pom attacks do sound like poo, I freely admit.
