|
|
Hello all,
I am looking for a Bb trumpet with a leadpipe that, together with mouthpiece, extends at least 6" away from the rest of the instrument.
I have never heard of anyone selling this specific kind of trumpet. If you know of one, I will greatly appreciate info.
Thanks!

Why don't you use your tuning slide?
You realise also, don't you, that extending a slide that much may affect your intonation? _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Bird

Would you consider sharing your reasons for this change? I am just curious.
Another point, you are asking for a leadpipe that moves the horn further from your face, not to the left, correct? “Away” could mean either. |

I'm trying to imagine how I could use the tuning slide.
If I detach the leadpipe weld from the rest of the horn allowing it to move freely, I could extend it. This would affect intonation. I also don't want to damage one of my trumpets in this way. |

Sure!
I am going to perform inside a costume. The curved pipes of a trumpet can't get to my mouth when I'm wearing the costume, but the leadpipe and mouthpiece can. |

How does jazz sound on a herald trumpet? |

It would be a custom job, but it is, I think, doable by a good brass tech.
I would set the leadpipe up like the Bach longbell D-Eb. It would take some measuring to get it right. With a tunable bell you could direct the leadpipe right into the 3rd valve casing, rather like a Schilke P5-4. Hmmmm
There's more than one way to cook a possum. |

Getting a second leadpipe and using clamps to hold it in an offset position might allow the horn's bell crook and valves to pass beside the mask. The existing tuning crook would be removed from the existing, unchanged leadpipe and turned at an angle to mate with the new and temporary leadpipe.
This would cause your hands to be slightly to the side, but might not be too different. And it would be reversible. |

The easiest way would be to have a tech make a 6" extension like the old cornets that plugged into the receiver, together with the tuning and valve slides could tune to Ab and transpose up a tone. No modification needed to your horn.

It may be what you're looking for with my Scodwell USA Bb's. The overall length of my Bb pipe is longer than the other Bb's out there and I've had feedback from players who have bought my horns that it was a bit of an adjustment when picking up my horn at first with the mouthpiece closer to your face. I had a fellow with Cirque who played my horn but I'm not sure if he wore a mask when performing. I could give you an exact measurement if you want. PM me or contact me through my website.
