|
|
Does anyone have recommendations for loose tuning slide on an old horn?
I have an old Bach Strad that I recently picked up. Even with the Hetman TSG, which is very tick, the slide will still move on its own, and slide out while playing.
Is there a heavy grease I can use?
Or, is this a repair shop issue?
Thanks everyone. |

If it were me I would have a repair person adjust the fit. The last time I had this done it to five minutes and I wasn't charged. |

You can Also replace the slide tubes. I wouldn’t be surprised if the horn plays better afterwards.

There's a Hetman for that...
I use № 1 for my flugel valves, № 2 for my other trumpet valves, № 4 for 3rd-valve slides, and № 7 for my tuning slide.
They make a 7.5 (thicker) and an 8 (thicker still).
EDIT just looked up what "TSG" is and that's the same as № 8. Sorry... _________________ Yamaha YTR6345HGS Bb

Ultra-Pure also has a VERY sticky lube...
And a good repair tech can make it better.. _________________ Freelance Performer/Educator

Another vote for anhydrous lanolin. Buy it a Babies-R-Us or any other places that sell nursing supplies. I like that it's medical grade and couldn't be safer. _________________ "I'm an engineer, which means I think I know a whole bunch of stuff I really don't."

I’ve tried most, it not all of the heavy greases. I’ve had the loose slide problem on several vintage horns I used daily. Ultra Pure “Heavy” is what has worked for me with the best results. Give it a try, a $4 small tub should last a couple of years or more |

Yes, Ultra Pure Heavy is goopy, sticky stuff that works for loose tuning slides.
Hetman used to have a product like this I thought worked even better (although it was more messy to apply) but it was discontinued.
There may be a point, however, at which the best remedy is to just have a tech expand the slide to restore the original fit. _________________ HERMOKIWI |

Sounds like a repair is probly best solution here. A good shop can expand the tubes to fit right. I’ve had success using the selmer red slide gel too. I think you could find it on amazon. |

The vintage Selmer thick Red stuff can't be beat. _________________ "There is no necessity for deadly strife" A. Lincoln 1860
