So much easier on Eb but you never really know the Hummel until you learn it thoroughly on Bb.

What do you mean by that?
Like a rite of passage on the Bb?

Further evidence that trumpet players are very often masochists.

Or that trumpeters are poor and can't afford an Eb.

One of my favourite recordings of the Hummel in E is the one by Håkan Hardenberger, who seems to be playing on a C trumpet, judging by the lip trills. Wonderful sound, and I’ve found myself that it works quite well.

I also played the Haydn on the Bb in a recital last October, which I enjoyed too. It’s a bit trickier than on the Eb, but the sound has a richness that I like.

Not that I have anything against E-flat, or E trumpets, nor to prove a point! It’s just that as I see it the larger instruments remain a valid musical option. If I had a good instrument in ‘low’ E or Eb I’d certainly give that a try as well - the richness of the original keyed trumpet of Weidinger, but with the advantage of valves!
