Blue Whale, Catalina Room, Vibrato Grill, Sam First, Black Rabbit Rose (on Thurs night only)
There are many others, but that'll get you started nicely.

Got res at Vibrato for Luke Carlsen and his 12-piece little big band, The Fresh Rhythm. Hoping the club owner might drop by. It would be something to meet Herb Alpert.
Also got invited sit in with a local Dixieland band. Glad I brought my horn and mutes. _________________ Jim Hatfield

That's awesome. How cool. Where will you be Dixieland?
Have fun at Vibrato. Know that it's a drive into the hills, so don't freak out if you're wondering if you're headed in the right direction. You'll wind through upper-middle-class suburbia before getting to the upscale strip mall in which the club is located. The food ain't cheap, but it's yummy and priced fairly. |

The Riverboat Dixieland Band plays various venues in SoCal. I’m going to join them for a couple of tunes at Zin, a bistro in Westlake Village.
Might also check out a big band that plays at Bogie’s, also in Westlake Village.
Was hoping some of the clubs I used to hit in LA in the 60’s might still be in business. I remember sitting at the bar in Howard Ramsey’s Lighthouse in Hermosa Beach convinced that Anita O’Day was singing just for me.
It’s still in business and has a nice variety of music including Sunday jazz brunch.

Unfortunately, Shelly’s Manne Hole is gone - but not forgotten!

Yes, Lighthouse is still alive and well. Should've included it in the original list. |

The band at the Vibrato Grill Friday, January 17, was terrific! Leader/vocalist Luke Carlsen delivered standards with charm and style helped by 12 top notch musicians including an absolutely killer reed player with the unlikely name of Miles Davis.
Had an interesting conversation with one of the regulars who said the club’s owner, Herb Alpert, comes by the venue frequently although he didn’t the night I was there.
The guy I spoke to said Alpert, who’s in his 80s, did most of the paintings and murals in the club, still plays and tours, is deeply involved in music education and has donated millions of dollars to both USC and UCLA. _________________ Jim Hatfield
